I've had 355's that made 450 ponies and I used a Ford Holley 735 cfm carb....
And it ran like a wet dream...:D:eek:

The cars that came with the 302 were "all" 4-speed cars... I'd never install an auto trans behind a 302....

Here is a clip of my OT car with a 30 30 solid. The car has it's "Born with" 302 and factory exhaust.

C'mon Deuces, give him the 365 to 375 that GM claimed to put out. The headers aren't the usual 15% gain, since the rams horns were already quite good.

  7. Ran one in a 327 model a roadster back in the 60's. It ran great street or strip. Ran best with AC plugs.

good cam for your specs----will pull hard from 25-2800 to 6500 but needs compression to run right--idle will be about 850-900 and vacuum around 13"--nothin sounds better to these old ears than a solid lifter small block. Have an 097 solid cam in my 57 283 FI car and it also sounds great.

Ditto Deuces, My Dad's Non HAMB friendly '68 302 Z/28 idled roughly around 1100 rpm with a lot of valve noise. It came alive about 3000-3500 rpm, and would sing to over 7000 rpm easily. Under 3000 rpm it was out to lunch.

We swapped the 3.73 gears with 4.56's to get some low speed driveability. Sweet cam I thought for a lighter car with deep gears. In a heavy car with an automatic, it would probably be a dog.

I bought a new 1969 Z/28 loaded with options, cloth interior, console, endura bumper, spoilers and hood induction, very heavy car. The 302 with solid lifters .030-.030 was noisy and not all that great in a heavy car, even with 4.10 factory gears.
I had problems with pushrods breaking thru the stamped rockers. Excessive valve tip wear. At 18,000 miles the rear cam plug fell out of the engine, at speed, out on I-94 and killed the engine.
I replaced it with a 355, used the original Z/28 bolt on stuff. Used a General Kinetics cam. Much better than that old .030-,030.. Torque to move that 3500 lbs..

I kept the 3.73's I had in mine and just installed a smaller Holley 650 List # 4777 carb on it to tool around the 'hood with... It had better low end torque with the smaller carb....

Put one in a 55 BelAire hardtop back in the early 70's. 283 (of course the guy who sold it to me claimed it was a 327 Corvette engine, (weren't they all?) 3 speed Hurst, 3.73 gears, 4bbl Carter(?) and I can't recall the heads (CRS).

Sounded great and fun to drive, but not very fast.

Would I do it again? Yes, without a second thought. Especially if I could be 19 again.

Smart move in my opinion. Those 302's came from the factory with a 780 cfm Holley. Hell, that equals to a 1100 cfm on a 427! I tried a 780 Holley on a high compression cammed up 302 sbf once, and the low end response was terrible. A 600 cfm Holley wound up giving the best strip times, and I ran a 550 Holley on it on the street because it was snappier, and used a little less fuel. I think most of us have started out with the bigger is better mistake on carb sizes (including Chevrolet?).

Tried a 30-30 in my '60 Chevy hardtop when in high school, my boss at the gas station where I worked after school installed everything for me, though was less than enthusiastic about the project. 283/2 barrel/3 speed and likely a 3;70 ratio rear was converted to the solid lift 30-30 with an old Chevy 4 barrel intake and a Carter WCFB. It was just 'never right' as I did not have the funds at the time to do the job correctly via rear end ratio, different heads maybe, etc. Sure sounded good though, along with the Walker Continentals....We put it back stock after a short time.

Somehow, I can't imagine all those options added 300 lbs to a 3200 lb car...

How true it is... The L-79 327/350 Vettes and Novas came with a little 575 cfm Holley... Maybe even smaller..

    I do have a GM/Holley 780 from an LS-6 laying around for a future 302 build..;)

Only go a 1/4 turn in from zero lash for the valve ajustment... That should add some more vacuum at idle and snapier performance...

That cam was designed for sustained high rpm, based on available shitty valvetrain of the time. You can do much better on a cam to get the most out of the patriot heads you spent good money on.

You've piqued my interest. What intake and whats been done to the heads? How much compression? Send me a pm if you prefer.

Well this is probably going to ruffle some feathers, but what the heck. The GM 30/30 camshaft is/was the Bubble Gum of camshafts. Yeah it would allow an engine to spin some RPM, but it did not really wake up until the engine was around 4000 RPM and while not having seen an actual dyno chart I think that the HP fell off around 6500 RPM.

When you compromise camshaft timing in order to facilitate a vacuum brake booster then it cannot be that great of a camshaft.

  27. Here's my friend Simeon's '55 with a Duntov 30/30 grind solid lifter cam.

He runs it in a 327, camel hump heads that have been ported, with an early Edelbrock Torker Intake and a 650 carb.

With a four speed and 4.11 posi... he's run a best of 12.40

    Here's a run where he ripped off a 12.60

It's all period parts... and it runs!

25 years ago I bought a 62 Corvette that was an original fuel injected 365hp car. The guy put a 4 barrel on it because he couldn't get the engine to run good with fuel injection. As it tuned out he had rebuilt the engine and added an aftermarket cam that had a lot of valve overlap. As soon as I put a new 30-30 OEM Chev cam in it the fuel injection ran fine 27sedanratrod

A Torker is period all right, if you consider mid seventies "period". It sure isn't mid-sixties "period", if thats whats being implied here, I'm not saying thats Sams intent, but thats how it will be taken, and I am not gonna silently stand by while history is being re-written. I was there, I sold this stuff.

I have not read all the posts, so forgive a repeat, if I warn about not forgetting to put a zinc additive in the oil before starting up an engine with a flat tappet cam. Most know by now of the removal of that additive from oils. Make sure your oil has zinc or prepare to buy another new cam sooner than you wanted.
