hello, I have a few questions about the ford c.o.e....first off, on a title, does it say that a COE is a "truck",or does it say COE, I know pickup titles say "P.U"...and for those that are on R.V chassis, what was needed to keep the R.V plate, I have a 38 ford COE on a 35 ft chassis and want to keep the R.V plate to bypass the scales..I have seen longer body COE haulers with the R.V plate and assume that they had to keep the numbers from the R.V and have a bed, maybe a port-a-potty ..any thoughts would be helpful , thanks
I'd contact your state DOT office and get a copy of the rules regarding RVs in your state. Asking on this forum will get you a lot of confusing answers that mean nothing at the DOT desk.
yes , i understand that states are different, I was just wondering what others did or needed to do, I guess , my way of learning from what others have had to go thru, as to talking with the "DOT" , they really couldnt give me a normal reply
Here is something I found a while back, but don't remember what state it is from. I'm posting it just for a general idea of what is required "Motor home means a multi-purpose vehicle with motive power that is designed to provide temporary residential accommodations, as evidenced by the presence of at least four of the following facilities: Cooking; refrigeration or ice box; self-contained toilet; heating and/or air conditioning; a potable water supply system including a faucet and a sink; and a separate 110-125 volt electrical power supply and/or an LP gas supply." As I stated earlier, your DOT is the one with the rules for your state. One thing I am sure of; Feds say absolutely no commercial activity
wolfcreek-steve....your info was spot on, I got ahold of MN DMV online, sent my questions and bingo, meet 4 of those accommodations is whats needed and a visit to the state inspector, sound easy to me....
The reason I've got some knowledge is I am also building a COE. I also don't want the hassle of scales and DOT cops, so I plan to register my COE as an RV, then even when not pulling the travel trailer I can still blow by the scales. Mine will have a sleeper with a pull-out kitchenette under the sleeper (along side the engine) I'll have everything but a toilet. One word of caution: I've heard of DOT cops asking if you've ever won any trophies with your truck, if you say yes they will arrest you for non-registration of a commercial truck. Their explanation is that the trophy is a form of payment for going to the show, so that makes it a commercial endeavor. Total bullshit, but when sitting along side the road facing thousands of dollars in fines, fees and court charges, it ain't real funny!
If you keep it under a certain G.V.W you will be fine. In wa. State under 16000 you don't have to stop at scales.
it was actually Ohio that was asking the question and it was do you win a prize or a trophy , if they prize has a "cash value" it was considered a commercial entity , but if you won a trophy it was not as there was no income generated . they used to do it to us racers all the time .
