Can someone tell me what the difference is between these steering wheels? I was looking for a three spoke steering wheel with three holes on each spoke and the center spoke is smaller than the two others. I have been told that both Covico and Ansen manufactured those steering wheels but if I understand correctly based on history Covico became Grant Superior and Grant Superior was manufactured at the same location as Ansen... So now I am just like totally confused. Help me Please!!!!
From what I have learned all Covico wheels have an even spoke placement. Most any of the others have one larger area between two of the spokes. Though "always" refered to as a Covico, the "Milner" style, one little hole between two bigger holes per spoke was not made by Covico in my opinion.EDIT PROOF...
I think the OP meant that the center hole was smaller, not the center spoke. And the Milner coupe steering wheel was definitely a Covico wheel. Lots of good info here: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=285684
I have a 1969 Midwest Auto catilog that lists and shows on pg.99, the "Milner" wheel as being made by Grant. To quote the discription "smooth grip platic rim, 14" dia., 3hole spokes,#345-802, black only, your price$7.45... your proof?
Do a search for the thread ***led: Official Metal Flake Steering Wheel Pic and ID Thread... Lots of info and pictures, maybe you will find what you are looking for.
Some dipstick was critiquing my original 3-spoke Bell wheel. He said "it would look a lot better if it was deep, with holes in the spokes. "Why do you have that big Moon shoe gas pedal?"
bowie, Not to mince words here but even though the car was built for the movie in the '70s wouldn't you want to be looking in a '62 catalog? Why would a '69 Catalog even list a "Milner" wheel the movie hadn't even come out yet? All the grant wheels I have ever laid hands on had all the holes the same size.
"milner" was just meant to be descriptive. It has bugged me for decades ,people calling that stye wheel a Covico. So PROVE me wrong! Just the facts mam...nothing but the facts!
My covico has 3 holes , biggest hole to the outside, smallest to the inside. The spokes seem to be evenly spaced
Swiped off the net...."THE Milner" wheel. Now I'm just learning this stuff but doesnt seem to have the "Covico" spoke spacing to me. I have about 200 pics of the coupe, I may have a better pic at home. The plot thickens..... John Milner.....not real???? BLASPHEMY!!!
The OP was not asking for pics, I felt there might be some useful info in this thread as Covico is discussed in it.
65panelrat: That is a really good info thread, I just wanted the OP to realize the differance in the even Covico spoke spacing compared to all the others. landseaandair: My catilog is pretty ratty and old. I'll see what i can do. Its no big deal;not trying to rattle cages...I've just been into the real story on this kind of old junk for awhile.
Cool, I'm a believe it when I see it type myself and a lot of folks seem convinced about this wheel but I can't find anything in print. Also can't believe the A.G. crowd haven't repopped it yet.
Covico made different styles, There is always a lot of conjecture on here concerning these wheels, well here are some photographic proofs. 1969 Catalog 1965 Ad 1963 ad
Way back when I drove my '32 down to see AG when it 1st came out. I commented to my girl (now wife of 36 years) that I thought that coupe should have had a Covico in it to be "right"... she just gave me that look!
Oh my goodness, you guys are cracking me up I have looked at the different threads on steering wheels in the HAMB and different people tell me different things. I'm still not having any luck finding any steering wheel that remotely looks the same I had ended up with a three spoke Ansen but the holes are the same size. Hopefully the one I am looking for will come along or I will make one myself! JK
What in the spacing? Are there any special markings on either steering wheel that would help me tell the difference?
Thank you so much, I will take all the information I can get as I am trying to learn about the history and differences. I am really eager to learn about cars
Man did I get screwed ! I just bought an orange 14 and a half inch chrome dish wheel this month for $150.00 and the catalogue says they cost $17.00 Oh well , it still feels good ! HeHeHe.......
