According to a couple of guys I talked to that worked for Covico, they Never stamped their name in their wheels, so id becomes that much harder!
Got this wheel and hub for my A pickup. It looks like a Superior 500 but there are no markings. Crager? Ansen? Covico? There is a Hellings & Stellings decal on the wheel but I wasn't aware they made wheels so I figured someone just stuck it on there. It's not metal flake, just black plastic, 13 1/2" diameter, 4 holes. It's the hub and tin cover that goes over the column that I've never seen. Its not home made either, fits the hub perfect and goes right over my F1 column tube. It was an ebay score, $22.50, had no info about it. Anyone ever seen one like this? What a rip off, I have looked at different catalogs and I think I should just start building a time machine. Then I would go and buy all these awesome parts at really low prices and come back to the present and sell them for much more. Retirement, here I come... Back to reality, things used to be so much cheaper but that is the price we pay for unique, hard to find items. I think we paid a couple of hundred dollars for the ansen wheel we have.
There were 2 covico's on eBay about 6 months ago. Tried to find the completed auctions but they are gone.
I kind of figured it was all relevant. The value of things change over time, but how sweet it would be to own a time machine. Is anyone working on one in the HAMB? lol
I get your point, but I can think of a lot of cool things to do with a time machine besides looking for steering wheels.
Yeah, I guess we could do much more with a time machine... but you don't want to change history too much...
I actually thought it was a Cragar (Slot and the Dot). Post no. 338 and Hamb Member Muttley schooled me. From the below thread it sounds like the manufacturer put a sticker / decal on them. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=438873&page=17
Wow!! I love the HAMB! I spent years behind parts counters, been around rods all my life, and I've seen steering wheels on this thread I've never seen before.
Same here. I originally had a Grant because I thought they were it. Then, I read the "Metal Flake Wheel" thread. After that, I HAD to have a Superior 500 red flake. I remove it, when I park for the night. I LOVE that wheel.
I had several of that style wheel, they are usually smaller diameter and make it hard to steer a car without power steering. Settled finally on what came stock in my 39 hard to improve on perfection. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
HAHA ****ER!! JK I sell those flake wheels all the time. They go fast! They dont even repop orange anymore so you gotta damn good deal Hows the 40 coming along?
Vintage spoke wheels aint cheap sister, a cragar would cost ya $300+ if you could find one. I stick em in the cl***ifieds for $100-175 and their gone within a matter of hours. ****.. maybe im too low
Oh I know they are expensive, yet worth their price. It is so awesome to have something that not that many have and on my part looking for it and eventually having the ability to find it gives me an immense sense of pride. Its just a lot of work See if you are sticking to pricing them low it just means you have a good heart. Yeah, we paid like 300 for the wrong one. I think we will keep that for now until we find the perfect one
I had gone through all the different steering wheel threads, I think there is also another one that asks what moves you or something. I found out a lot through those threads very informational. I have seen the different areas where you like bolt them in some steering wheels it is a bit different. Little by little I learn. Thanks to every single one of you. Here is the other steering wheel thread http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=374405&highlight=ansen+steering+wheels
A good friend of mine owns a company called Covico Mfg Co and has been building vinyl dipped stainless steel steering wheels for all the years that I've known him (going on 20 now). They are still available, mostly through speed boat suppliers like Rex Marine and the like. I'm pretty sure that he only makes black and white wheels now though. He's located in Rolla MO, you can look him up in the phone book or Google.
I think if the swap meets and yard sales are something you have time to do,that wheel is out there just waiting to be bought up for cheap ! (Maybe )
I truly hope that is the case. But so far no luck and I haven't had time to go to a yard sale or swap meet. I was told that I can go to the Good guys car show since they usually have that there, but that is not until late August.
Couldn't you just get a wheel that is otherwise right with sketchy chrome (would be cheap), fill the center hole, drill the smaller hole, metal finish it and have it re-chromed? Might be almost the same money as a mint one. Just a thought.
