One place left on my bucket list is Alaska.
    Thanks for the adventure.
If you're passing through Calgary I'd be happy to crack a cold one with you.

Yep my bucket list includes Alaska too. In 1995 I learned alot about the state while aboard the Navy gator freighter USS Anchorage, doing some repair work on a generator underway between Okinawa and Singapore. Got to know a couple of the officers who seemed pretty knowledgeable about the state, didn't mind talking to a civilian with a ponytail, and the books they had showed me how beautiful the state really is. I wish I could thank them for what I learned from them. I just wanna do the Alaska thing like you're doing Bob, rather than from a cruise ship. Looks like way more fun.

Having done Alaska both ways, the way Bob is doing it is WAY more fun. On cruise ships, you only get to see what they want you to. Of course if you can only go that way, it is better than not at all.

John mentioned the top of the dome above Dawson, the view from up there is just fantastic, this is looking north.

This is looking up Bonanza Creek which is where the first gold was discovered, got just a bit torn up eh???

North again, it's a better view. OOOPS, who's that woman in the picture, just some lady I found hitchikeing on the top of the world highway.

She is everywhere and for that I am thankfull.

Gold Dredge # 4 was one of the ones saved from rusting away to nothing or being scrapped for the salvage value. It and others like it are responsible for the devestation in the area, also for the gold that was extracted.

That was the new way, there are folks still doing it the old way. This couple was from Illinois, they didn't find anything but fools gold.

Just to prove that all of that devestated stuff isn't that terrible, this moose was feeding in a pond next to a couple of tailing piles.

Finally put his head up, just a young Moose.

These were around every corner, never did see any birds around them though, can't figure out what kind of birds they wanted to attract.

At first I thought that this was a Willys.

I think that says Franklin, correct me if I'm wrong.

Those big machines sure can take a hunk of dirt out of a hillside can't they?

This is the area we were in today.

We then headed south but took a quick trip East up the Dempster Highway just to say that we had done it.

The Dempster runs to the northeast up into the Northwest Territory, we did it in 79 but ain't gonna take the 52 up there, too rough and we don't have the 2 days it takes.

Those are kilometers my friends, still a long way to go just to turn around and come back. Besides we have already been to the Artic Circle.

Where else do you see game limits on a highway sign???

That's a bit scary, espically since I just got diagnosed with AFib before this trip.

The bridge over the Klondike river. Anybody remember Sgt. Preston of the RCNP and his dog king.

More driveway decorations, well not excatly, it was back off the driveway a ways.

Also had a couple of trucks.

Hey, it turns out that is all I have posted to Picture trail, looks like I'll have to get to work and upload some more.

Bob, thanks so much for sharing your wonderful trip with everyone. I think the big touring car is a McLaughlin not a Franklin.

Nice trip...OahuEli...I was on the Gator boat USS Juneau(LPD-10) in 1976. For the spirit of 76 celebration the Anchorage and the Juneau both went to Alaska. We went to Juneau and the Anchorage went to...Anchorage Alaska. Juneau was a beautiful town. It was a good time. Then we played war games all the way back home. :)

Well, gold dredging does make a mess. However ,it is no worse than Mount St. Helens going off,a hurricane,or a major flood. There is no finer moose browse than where a dredge has gone through.

Vaguely. Remember Dudley Do-Right better. :)

Loving this. We rode the White Pass and Yukon RR a few years ago . . . they stopped the train and dropped us off at our trailhead. we hiked all afternoon, and they stopped on the way back down to pick us up.

Y'all are living the good life!

I doubt that any kid growing up in the 50's didn't know who Sgt Preston and King were. For a while he was probably as well known as Roy Rogers and Bullet

Got ahead of myself and forgot to post some more pics from Dawson City and our neat cabin.

Maggie fixed this Salmon and I cooked it on the grille that was furnished with our cabin overlooking the Yukon River.

    Almost done, it was delicious.

Got the angle right on this shot of the cabin and the car.

Ours is the top floor on the left, really neat little place to spend a couple of days.

Looking down on the picnic table from the back deck.

We could have had this one but the view from the 2nd floor deck was better.

This is what I did to the back of the car after removing the back seat. There is a mini spare under the green bag on the left and the cooler has a drain hose attached so that I don't have to remove it to drain it.

The last shot leaving Dawson City, appropriate for the 1890's in this wild town.

    Another Ptarmagin on the road.

And then,"A PARTRIDGE IN A PEAR TREE" well it's actually that Ptarmagin and the tree is Willow but close enough for government work.

Lots of construction, especially on bridges.

    Cool river narrows and rapids.

I just love these signs that explain everything.

That should bring it up to date for the time we left Dawson on the way to Whitehorse.

Bob, that may be a "McClaughlan", they were sold in Canada, under the Buick dealership network.
I sure am enjoying your travels, thank you.

One more picture from the Bonanza Creek portion of the trip,

YEAH RIGHT. We didn't see any Elk in the Yukon yet in spite of the signs. And don't try to tell me that is a picture of a Caribou, I don't see any brow tines on it.

The Whitehorse welcome sign is very similar to all of the others and the US could take a lesson from the Canadians.

There is a young bear in this picture, in the upper right hand corner just a little down from the corner. He was running along the fence line right in town.

Maggie with her new buddy Sadie, hey Jeff & Tad, squirty is gonna be jealous.

This is the second B&B that we have stayed at where there was a beautiful garden.

The view from out upstairs room.

Just parked on the street in Whitehorse.

Gotta have ice cream at Lil's place for desert.

Yard Art, these are just held together with tie wraps.

WOW, more rain, what a surprise.

The 'Franklin' was air-cooled; no radiator cap, I believe.
I am still enjoying my holiday with you, thanks B&M.

They were big enough to haul you back to the swamp in Alaska and the Yukon, we are in Fort Nelson BC now and they aren't too bad.

Be sure to stop in Fort Nelson and see the small museum there. Lots of pictures of the Alaska Hiway being built and the old guy that runs it has a 1908 Brush.
Then try to visit the WAC Bennet dam just outside Fort St. John, in Hudson Hope. You can go down 550 feet below the water level and see the big dynamos.
I worked on the elevators there. It is one of the largest earth filled dams.

A desert in The Yukon???????? Yep, at Carcross on the way to Skagway.

The sign says it all, it explains how the sand blows in from a lake shore. Weird eh?????

There was also a cool old hardware and general store that still had some of the vintage goods on the shelves.

Some of the shops have these native decorations on the outside, striking if I do say so myself.

At the summitt, white pass, back in Alaska again for the last time this trip

The coloration on the rocks blows us away but then again we are scenery freaks.

Have you noticed that we like waterfalls ????

And even wet nice colored rocks.

The Chebby and a waterfall just seem to go together.

We are taking this train this afternoon for a 3 hour round trip (isn't that how Gillagan started out??) this afternoon. Up to the white pass and back, didn't do that with my kids so Maggie gets lucky.

First thing we see is one of the old first run locomotives long since retired.

The grave of one of the first settelers of Skagway, he was shot in a duel and died immediatley. His opponent lived for 10 days. That was only 2 days ago and I can't even remember his name, nickname was soapy.

Loooking back at the harbor from one of the switchbacks, 4 cruise ships in port, the train was filled with German Tourists.

How about a little Glacier scenery, been a while since we had some of that.

Early graffiti, approved by the owners, a tribute to the Buchanon guy from the kids he sponsered to come and work during the summer.

Yep, that's where we are going, over the trestle and into the tunnell.

If you are thinking that looks scary, you are right, it was.

Too many again, to be continued
