I want to remove the car wax on my car and start over from scratch. I made a mess. I have a black satin finish and I want to try something new. Is there something made to remove car wax or is there a trick of the trade. Thank You Lou
The automotive paint stores has a prep to wipe down a car before painting,, a wax and grease remover,,,reg paint thinner or lacquer thinner will remove wax. HRP
Use Dawn dish washing soap. Heavy on the soap and suds. It is what many detailers recommend (it is even in the Zaino instructions, that high dollar synth wax). Just really wash it good and rinse, then wash it again. You will notice the water will not be beading much after that. You don't need to do anything severe, this will give you a good clean finish to start from.
And if that doesn't cut it (!) try 36 grit. No not really, try the grease and wax remover 1st. Dawn may do the trick if you have it on hand, hot water inside or shady rest.
DUDE! I found that Simple Green (this week detailing) cuts heavy as in seldom washed trucks crud/dead paint. Amazing stuff for carpets too.
Pant thinners can be dangerous....some are stronger than others...can bite into paint...wax and grease remover or dish soap probably safest...wax and grease remover designed to take oils and contamination out before painting...even good before doing any bodywork...
Just use rubbing alcohol mixed with water. Much cheaper then wax and grease remover and you can pick it up pretty much anywhere.
I want to start over and get this look. They used the turtle wax ice spray. I have to strip off the old nightmare that's on there now. Thank you for all the responses. I really appreciate it.
I have noticed Simply Green will sometimes mess with aluminum parts depending on the mix, thats why I think the Dawn is a better way to do. I got some Simply Green on my Radir mags and it spotted them so I had to polish them again. No big deal...nothing like when a buddy of mine used white wall cleaner on his tires and got it all over his mags and it really messed them up.
Wax an Grease remover, is used to clean the surface before painting. It leaves no residue. It will do just. what you are asking for.
Prep-Sol, that's what it's made for. Don't think I'd venture lacquer thinner, unless bare metal is your goal.
Reading and cringing here.....Why not use HOT Soapy water. Say a grease cutting dish soap? Normaly I wouldn't say dish soap cuz it not PH balanced and over time will leave a white haze on a dark color. But Sand paper ect? I cant watch
I have used Dawn and it works great to cut wax. And it's what my wife uses on the dishes so I don't have to go far to get it.
Go to a good Painters Supply. If not , stop by a quality body shop. and ask where they get there supplys. I use PPG Acrylic-clean dx330 .
