  1. We probably all had a budget in mind for our cars when we started. A not to exceed limit. Either set by yourself or your significant other!

How many folks actually stayed under their original budget?

Hoping to be around $5K on my '46, and 75% of it will be engine and T5. The truck was cheap, a family freebie deal. Just stabbed the 235 Friday nite!

  9. Has anyone stayed on budget would be a better question !:D My general rule of thumb is figure out how much and how long you think the build will take. Then times that by 2 1/2 - 3 times and your pretty damn close !

Budget to me is only spending what doesn't leave me broke.

I stayed in budget for my brake swap..... Don't mention the round about I went through to make the rear end match... Or the new exhaust to clear the new suspension bits.... Or the stuff I replaced just because I might as well while its all apart...... Or the wheels that I just didn't like in black.....

Budget? I can't rub two dimes together, still I plug away-one dime at time.

  17. Develop a budget then triple that to get the low end of what your project will cost. In a hobby of specialized parts and special talent to work on them, who the heck can predict anything except it costs lotsa bucks. I just make sure all my expenses/bills are paid and my retirement accounts funded. What's left is that months car budget.

when I started out on my chevy II I figured around $12,000. I still figure I will bring it in close to that. I decided to step up to better heads than I originally planned, if I add in the difference between the two heads, I still think I'll be within about a grand, and I'm getting to where I see light at the end of the tunnel.

Based on a lot of life-experience: If you claim to have stayed on budget, you are either lying to yourself or lying to everyone else !!

  22. I stayed on track, and came in 3 and a half weeks before my self imposed time limit too. I do have the luxury of no ball and chain, and im time rich.

I bought my last project so many years ago, I figure the appreciation on my vintage tin and other parts keeps me always "Under Budget".................. Jeff

never add up how much you spent, unless maybe to figure value for insurance. budget is like liquid mercury - never get your finger on it, and if you do you will get sick.

Liberally figure all costs. Triple that. Put no time constraint on the project. You might be close, but never add it all up.

How do you budget a hot rod?
It's not possible to stick to the original plan exactly. That's if you have an exact plan anyway.

  29. 8 years ago I told my wife I would spend less than the cost of a new pick-up. Prices of pick-ups have doubled since then so I'm still OK!
