Driving with no plate question.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by khead47, Aug 2, 2013.

  1. Are you buying it to flip it or to keep it ?

If you are keeping it, insure it with your carrier and close the ***le
in your name and have a Bill of Sale made out from the previous owner.

Take a current set of plates in your name, put them on the car,
    drive home.

If you get stopped, tell the truth.

If you are flipping it, take a trailer and take it home that way
or if you don't have a trailer then have someone haul it.

If you are driving, just for transport, a dated bill of sale (pref notorized) a signed ***le (if it is a ***le state) and insurance card are good enough. I was a Police Officer

I have done it on more than one occasion. Once was from California to SC....

If it wasn't for fic***ious license plates, half the cars I bought would have been left where I saw them.

I have at times ran a Tag that belonged to another car and have been lucky as I've never been caught. I have just done it this weekend as I bought and sold a vehicle at the NSRA Nats in Louisville, KY. Be aware that running an improper Tag in some states including Kentucky is a felony and you could become a bad mans boy friend if caught.

This is so easy, it took me FOUR pages to figure it out, hire an illegal, no plates, no papers, no problem.

in michigan no plate on newly purchased vehicles is one of very few processes that are a 'gift'!

out-of-state, i get insurance, pay and use the process of that state to get the ***le in my name, purchase a temporary tag, if necessary, then drive seamlessly home! this can cost me extra mone......BUT AT THAT POINT............... legally i've removed the previous owner from the equation.

i'm not a dealer, just-joe-lunch-bucket, with a vehicle addition, and on occasion more money than brains.

this has always worked for me, you GOTTA do what works for you. BUT WHEN YOU RUN AFOWL OF THE LEGAL PROCESS AND THE LAW ENFORCEMENT COMMUNITY, MAN-UP...... TAKE YOUR LUMPS!

  9. ...when you get pulled over, it never hurts to jump out, point your finger at them and shout "..your making a career decision smokey...I know the mayor!" Unless your not in a small town and then it never hurts to add "...and I pay your salary"

But on a serious note, if it was in Missouri you would be best to have all paperwork, even a copy of the craigslist add or something, the singed/dated ***le w/ mileage noted, bill of sale and an insurance card. In Missouri your current insurance card covers you for upto 30 days when you purchase another vehicle. Don't be a **** and be cool, bet you will receive the same in return (at least with the guys I know) as long as your just p***ing through.

Don't over do it with the 'yes sir' or 'officer' replies, do be polite, honest and obey all traffic laws, a thank you in closing is always ok. (LEO 13 years)

  10. No big deal, go to the local DMV and temp. (cardboard) tags . THEY ARE GOOD FOR 30 days. They will not cost much you do need an insurance card though. Now "grab a biscuit ...daylight is burning"............the Duke.

Got stopped one time for moving a tag to a car I had recently bought and repaired to test drive. The officer very kindly said he wasn't going to charge me with a felony, impound the car, and haul me to jail because i had the wife and 3 small kids with me.

Lucky I guess - if you call flushing $150 down the drain.

Just run it and don't stop for no one! Oh yeah, get a buddy in a 78 Trans-Am to run decoy for you and make sure you have CBs so we can hear all the good radio chatter.....
