I was on my way back from Vegas today coming down Hwy 93 from Boulder City/Hoover Dam/Las Vegas and pulled over in front of a great old car salvage yard about 30 miles north of Kingman. Plenty of 40's, '50's & some '60's in what I would call fair to good shape. Yard was closed but hours were posted. Young (for me ) dude came out and we chatted. Sign says "tour of yard $5 donation". No prices on cars that I could see along fence. Dude was helpful and eager to talk, but looks like policy is "call ahead" for more details.
I am not sure of HAMB policy on posting phone numbers, etc., so contact me via email for phone number. Sorry, no pics.
Hwy 93 is on AZ side of River running North/South.
I will definitely be going back later in Fall for walk around yard !

  2. Highway 93 and 7th Street. Google Earth shows the car REALLY well that are on the front row.

drove by that place many times on my way to Boulder  (long before the bridge was build)
    definitely a very interesting collection
but i always got the impression that the owner knows exactly the value of what he has ...
so i dont think it is a place for bargain hunters :(

Address on card says: 14981 Hwy 93, Dolan Springs, AZ, 86441
Some old station wagons in good shape, if you like that. I spotted several Buicks and Olds. I am a nailhead fan, so I could go for one. A '41 Ford sedan, looks mostly like shell. Lots of good looking stuff in back behind maze of fences. I am a Ford shoebox owner, but "Dude" may just be tow truck driver because he couldn't say what all was back there. Face it, places out there (middle of Desert) can't get premium hot rod guys to live on premises. He may have been an extra for Breaking Bad ?

...and what looks like a late 30's LaSalle, 55 Pontiac in the corner, 2nd row, maybe another LaSalle, rusty early 30's coupe far left in the back, maybe a T touring on the roof right side, a $5 tour would be worth it, wish I lived closer!

  9. Wish there was a place like that up here in the North East...I see them as pretty much gold mines.

Well, I have found that due to computer age, last 20 years, there are few "deals/nuggets" to be had out there in boondock junk yards. Everybody now knows what their junk is worth. I went on a cross country trip couple of years ago, hitting junk yards as it was convenient, searching for a right front fender for my '57 Merc. Big Mercury salvage yard near Sacramento had one for about $250 -Yikes, I thought. I finally found an old car yard in So. Illinois that had fenders and their price was about the exact same price!
So, the joy of these old yards is in the LOOKING. Many of the owners are just like their junk yard dogs, unwilling to negotiate or get pissed off if you are taking their time without buying something.
The yard I mentioned on Hwy 93 had a few '55-'56 Pontiacs. Not sure if many of these guys are willing to strip parts. Most only want to sell whole cars for $$$$.

Not really a secret! I've know about it for many years, along with lots of other Arizona Hot rodders. The problem is though, in all that time I don't know one person who has successfully purchased anything from the owner. I have been up there twice in that time period with a friend to retrieve a "deal" with the trailer on the truck ready to haul home and had the deal "fall through". I really don't believe that it's a working yard of any sort, just a hoarder's personal collection. I hate to give you bad news like that...

  13. Been by there many times when delivering my NASCAR trophies to Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Stopped once and talked to the guy, prices were high -some of the cars are nice, others just what you'd expect after 50 years of rats and tumbleweeds and everybody stealing the trim pieces. I guess us Southwest guys are used to relatively rust-free cars as compared to stuff from back east, so maybe they're not so pricey after all. But as need louvers said, I've never heard of anybody getting anything out of there. Oh wait, Rick from Rick's Restorations in Vegas supposedly got a 60 Cad to make a couch out of.

A few months back I found a much larger than that honey hole about 25 miles from me in one of the smaller towns here. Hundreds or pretty complete cars all 30's,40's,50's and 60's. I spent hours checking them all out. The owner was cool with it, but when it came to buying something he was fairly hard to get a number out of. It seemed like he had an attachement to most the stuff and wanted too much. Really cool to look though.

Is this the same place? I took these photos a while back. It was so long ago, that you could still afford to drive a gas-guzzling Grand Wagoneer from Missouri to Las Vegas and back.

I've been there. Prices in cuckoo land. Wanted $1.5m for the whole yard, but few cars are worth over $1000.

Boo-Hoo! Now I am crushed! I really thought I might be on to something. My suspicions are confirmed by the old saying "If you can see it from the highway, it's not for sale."

Hwy 63 across "Golden Valley" (what a joke) , the cut over to Bullhead City from Kingman, has a yard on North side of highway with a line up of about 10-15 early '50's Ford pickups. I never stopped because I don't have one, but I always thought every '50's truck owner West of Mississippi must know about that place! Funny thing is, every time I go by there over the last 10 years, there are MORE trucks showing up there ! That tells me as louverguy comments, it is just another Junkyard Flasher showing off his junk!
ps; Thanks louverguy for chiming in on this thread. I am also an old school louver lover, and now I have a lead for more work on my 51 if I decide to build a belly pan or punch up the deck lid.<!-- / sig -->

Barn Find - That is not the same place as I saw. Can't say I ever heard of Grass Hopper Junction, AZ but I am a newbie and have not been to So.AZ in about 20 years, so it may still exist somewhere. Sandstorms and flash floods get crazy, so it may have just blown away. Yard I saw has a T- Touring up on roof of shed. Nice touch for getting attention!

Uhh... the fact that you looked throughout the country for a '57 Merc fender, then found one in CA and one in IL should illustrate why the fenders were priced at $250. They are hard to find. I've been to tons of car shows and swap meets and have rarely ever seen any '57 Merc stuff, ever. Just not much left in existence.
$250 for a nice fender would be a really good price. However, if the fender is not so nice, then the price would seem to be more of a problem. Then the shipping and resto costs are on top of that... so, still understandable if it's a problem. BUT if you need one, and the fender was nice.... no reason to balk.

Have you priced new replacement fenders from a dealer these days??? Stuff you can just run out and buy can be twice that much, easy. Maybe even 3x.

Cool cars none are for sale but once you start researching you find out they all belong to missing people. Next thing your car is sitting in the yard and you are no place to be found.

Been by that place more than a few times on my way to Vegas. Cool place.

Grasshopper Junction is just a wide spot in the road with a little store there. Sits opposite the road that goes to the ghost town of Chloride.

That place on highway 68 (not 63) from Kingman to Bullhead City with all the late 40's early 50's Ford trucks is actually a going business that deals in body parts for those years of Ford trucks. Can't recall the name of the place but they carry a lot of parts.

I've been by that place but it's to rich for me. I used to drive a wrecker or a small transport into AZ on a weekly basis picking up totals from small operators all along 66 . This was back in the 60s and it seemed that every gas station / garage had a yard full of cars , some wrecks ,some abandoned or left for tow charges or repair bills. I sure wish I had known what some of that iron would be worth today. "Ladybirds" big campaign to rid our highways of junk ,did in a lot of these places . I-40 bypassed many small towns. Delgadillo's in Seligman was quite a treat and at last report was still being operated by one of the younger family members. Used to be a good sized garage directly across the highway that used to haul cars out of . Worst of all were the head ons and there were many of them on 66 in those days.

  26. I agree... we would pay that price up here for "rust belt" pieces and then spend a couple of months restoring it.

What I've seen of desert parts is that they were solid and mostly worth the price just to save time... and remember... "Time is Money"!

I stand corrected ! I'm glad he's working it instead of being a teaser.

  28. He used to be the only towing company in that area and thats where most of those cars came from. Ive stopped and talked to him a few times (I have land up there) and although he is a major kook, if you are a car guy and dont talk to him like hes trying to screw everyone, he comes down quite a bit on those "firm" prices.

I think you are referring to Mid-Fifties F100. She is an expert on the '53 - 56 Ford trucks.
