The Mormon Meteor II was a short-lived version of Jenkin's record-setting car. 1936, I believe. They pulled the Duesenberg motor and squeezed in a V-12 Curtis aircraft engine to compete with the European compe***ion. Augie Dusenberg designed an entirely fresh ch***is the following year for the Mormon Meteor III that was better matched to the weight of the big V-12.

Somewhere I have a pix of of A. J. Foyt's Watson roadster being towed into the Milwaukee Mile, one week after winning the '64 Indy 500 on an open trailer behind a Ford Country Squire "woody" wagon.

Today, show room stock Miatas travel in 53' enclosed trailer/machine shops, that are color matched with the car and tractor, to amateur races.

Smokey Yunick in his book said he flat towed his race car to Indy by himself in the 50s. I wish I was his neighbor back then.

Thank You for the GREAT Pics/Link. How things have changed, most of us old racers could not afford the present day haulers, We spent all our money on car- engines -tires. Majority of trailers were low buck deals. John

Don't know if Zora Arkus Duntov was rich and famous in 1947 but if he was he didn't waste a lot of it on a fancy hauler for his Talbot. :)

  18. Not OT at all. One of those transporters is featured in the story.

  19. Wow, great photos. Even the cars in the background are awesome.

  20. Anyone know anything about this trailer?

One of my all time favourites..Dave
Koffel grafted the back 2/3's of a Chevy
or GMC Suburban to the front 9/10's of
a long wheelbase 'Low Cab Forward'
short-nose, COE GMC to create this
    unique hybrid-bodied hauler!

The greatest of them all, because it was a race truck itself. Very fast.

  25. Looks like a dolly wheel setup,,,,no weight on tow vehicle.
    probably was a boat trailer.

    Ever the showman and commensurate
with everything else he did/ built/drove,
even his transporters were a little bit
'over the top' - "TV Tommy" Ivo's Dodge
    L-600 custom-built enclosed ramp truck
that carried two fuel dragsters, riding
one on top of the other, inside in a
    clear- plexigl***-sided body and his
    customized '69 Corvette 'street driver";
riding outside, up on the roof top! I
remember seeing this rig, with the two
dragsters and the 'Vette, on display, back
in Jan. 1970 (or maybe '71 or 72??) at
the (used to be annual) ISCA car show
circuit 'Speed Sport'' show at the CNE
    grounds in Toronto.

I saw this rig in Tyler, Tx. around 1983 when I was in X-Ray school at Tyler Junior College. It was parked at Ken Halls service station; at the time he also operated I-20 and Hallsville Drag Strips. It was there as a promotion for the races at I-20. where I watched the Showboat/Wagon Master make 3 exhibition runs (that's a separate story). I wonder if it's still around, I'm guessing it is for the show circuit. Butch/56sedandelivery

And that trailer with the Ford on it, I think it was a boat trailer; you can see the "V" for a boat hull at the rear of the trailer.
