GASSER MUST HAVES and cant haves?

    Hi Larry

    Back in 63' when I was putting it together not to many guys had narrowed rear's , it was costly for the stuff and the main money was going into the engine to go faster.

    I broke a few stock Pontiac axles so I stepped up and bought a pair of Henry's axles, and they were quite a few bucks but did not break

    Most guys building a Fueler could afford a narrowed rear to go along with a custom Dragster frame, but that was way out of my league as I spent all my coin for 7 yrs just building & running the 37'

    It didn't seem to me to be worded wrong, except when you took a part of the post and quoted it. Or when you totally switched the words "traditional" and "common".
    I never said the cars mentioned weren't traditional, nor did I say the Flinstone Flyer was common. I think everyone will agree that there were more Willys, Anglias, and Tri 5 Chevys than all the other makes of bodies used during the gasser era.
    I guess the others you think were also confused must have sent you a PM, because I didn't see anyone say it confused them. ;)

  4. Don, I see you're in Granada Hills. Did you ever see the other blue Chevy like yours in that area with Webers(?) about 10 yrs ago?

    I have had disc brakes on my car for over 40 years, as I said before the only era I have to be true to is my era.

    Yep, sounds about right..I started in 69' so was still in process in 71', I be about five years behind [or ahead] of Hamb friendly/traditional even though the car is a 51'..Keep forgetting...

    The most "traditional" and one of the most important things in my life so far has been stayin' alive.....disc brakes have helped that happen several times. All cars built by me, for me, will have them. Even my 409 powered '53 "gasser style"

    Maybe about 15 yrs or so at the Car Wash in Northridge there was a street blue 37' but never saw it with the hood open, was a pretty clean one

    Back in the 60's here in so-cal there were quite a few 37' chevys in the gas class's, that is why Curt at Cal Auto made his glass front ends

    The '37 was/is a great looking body, and I still see plenty of steel and glass '37 Chevys when we have nostalgia events at Woodburn. I had a 413 Chrysler powered '40 coupe in 1968, with Torqueflite trans, and it was a handful, even with all steel body parts.

    Its hard to see from my scan but check the 1963 date on the Hurst-airheart brakes. My Willys coupe had them on the front. Hell Ohio George even had coil overs on his 33 Willys.

    This C/Gasser was from my area, was one of my favorites. This is a shot from 1965, shows the injected 283 and if you look closely, an early Olds rearend. It ran low 12's as I remember.

    Pretty sure Hugh Tucker's record holding AA/SR had disc brakes in 1964, from pictures I have dated to that year. So I'd guess some gassers could also have them at that time period.

    My 33 Willys front & Pontiac rears did not work too good after 3 runs in a row for class, would have to use both feet to get her stopped from 120 mph

    Fronts were turned a bit over size and you could see where the drums were a bit bell shaped and not contacting the shoes all the way across, but it stopped and that was good for a 23' yr old kid just learning all the racing stuff

    At 72' and a bit smarter now that was pretty dumb, hind sight is 20 - 20 they say !!!!!!!!!!

    I think that was a weird EAST COAST thing that spread like the plague! [Says the guy who used to have them on his pickup....]

  18. Something else that is regularly overlooked, both then and now (especially now). The NHRA rules stated that at rest the car must sit level, or have a front down rake - no nose high!

    That ought to start some controversy.

    I remember this the same way. They seemed to forget that we were the reason they were selling tickets but those days were still the best and most exciting for me. Wouldnt trade those days for anything.

    I don't know how this setting hi in the air thing got so out of hand, I saw a black 55 at some rod show that was 3 ' ft hi for the front bumper

    You would think that common sense would let these guys know how un safe that is at speed plus pretty dumb looking too, oh well to each his own

    Still haven't seen it said......... The Number one Rule........Fenders its gotta have fuckin fenders! Otherwise it's an Altered or Allturd as I refer to mine!

    They were also supposed to have factory type inner fenders, at least part of 'em. Center of crank at the frt snout was 24"max height.
