  1. Thought you guys mite like to see some pics of my D/G Stude 26 years or so ago...I was in my 20s....drove this on the street with 302,4-speed and 5.38s or 3.08s.... Ran a best of 12.5,never had it topped out with the 3.08! I DO know (state trooper told me so...) 2500 rpm was 66 mph,I had it rollin 6500 when street racin a latemodel Trans am and it was gettin light...I backed off when I remembered I had Farm and Fleet duralons on the front...Can any of you math guys tell me how fast 6600 rpm was? Honestly...

  2. well....if 2500 RPMs was 66 MPH , then 6500 RPMS is 171.6 MPH

there is that math you thought you would never use

divide 66 by 5 equals ...um

    then multiply 11 x 13

I get 143 mph, but I am not perfect at math

nevermind :0 yea, I just got 171.6 by 66 divided by 5, then multiply by 13... wtf

  5. I was gonna say 170-175mph, if you were any where near that.., you are fortunate to be here to tell the tale!

With the figures you've given 2500 rpm being 66 mph. You would have been running a 27.32 O.D. tire. Given that 6500 rpm would equal 171.6 mph.

The formula is mph X 168 that's divided by 1/2 tire O.D. which would have been divided by gear ratio

  7. Thanks guys! I don't remember my street tire size 26 or so I think.. No disrespect intended by any means but we all know it couldnt have bean 171 mph and believe me I have no reason to fib on the numbers I gave ya, 25 or 26 hundred at 66 mph is what the trooper ticketed me for...I was takin my then wife out for dinner and thought I was doin (tryin to be semi legal with her in the car) what I thought was about 55 0r 60. The trooper came at us from the east we were heading west. No front bumper,no speedo,no turn signals,no front plate,no wipers...he was kind and only gave a speeding ticket and the rest were written warnings.... Also on a different day,we were heading to Albany beach, cooler ful of beer and in our swim suits....A nightrider lookin Trans am p***ed us (again I was behavin at 55) and as He pulled away from us I could only stand it for about 10 seconds...So I shoved that lever into 3rd and matted it....It took a while for that dinky 302 to get back in its power band with those 308s but I finally caught him(he saw me and stepped on it) and went around him at 65 or 6600 and I'm tellin ya that old Stude was rockin and rollin and I didnt think it was gonna be controllable much longer but I got around him and backed out of it.... It felt like a zillion mph but I could believe 135 or 140....

  8. I realise I couldnt have bean doin 171,clutch wasnt slippn nor were the tires...

135 mph would be 5113 rpm given the rest of the numbers. With the 5.38's 6500 rpm would've been 98.2 mph The question is. How accurate was the tach?

If you were doing 55 like you thought you were ( the cop knew you weren't going to fight the ticket after he let you off on all the other stuff ) at 2500, then 6600 would have been 145.2MPH. ( and 143 at 6500)

    55 at 2600 would have been 139.6 at 6600 ( and 137 at 6500 )

  11. I had two 3rd members for my Olds rearend,One was a 5.38 with a gizmo in the spiders that lockedem, the other was an open rearend and I dont really remember how I came up with the 308 ratio part mebbe it was something close...I know it was alot higher than that 5.38...I wonder what was available back then in a stock rear ratio...I always just called it my "Bonneville gear"...

  12. Good thought...And ya know what, like I said in last post,I never really new what the open rear gear ratio was,I just figgered about a 308,wonder what was in most of those rears stock...I do know right now I run it alot at the drags and it turns 124 mph and it aint NEARLY as fast as that day 25 odd years ago...It is pretty docile at 124mph and back then ( iwas alot wilder) I was white knucklin it and way past where I thought it was safe but was NOT gonna back out of it till I went around that T.A. I have not had it going near that fast since and it now has 550 hp and .64-1 overdrive,4.88 gears (on the street w/ 29" tall tires, 5.38 at track w/32s) I dunno what the top end is now but prolly faster than aerodynamics will let it stay on the pavement... I bet yer close...I would bet I was runnin all of 130 + that day back then...

  13. Thats a good question...I wonder if it is correct even now...Twas a brand new Autometer Procomp II,I still use it...

I would guess it was a 3.23 which was quite common in the early Olds, my 51 convert was a 3.64, ***ume due to heavier car.

  15. Could be if that was a common gear.I know one thing...if I had blown one of the F&F Duralons (4") on the front,we would still be rollin....I KNOW we were goin 130 +...

You think the cop might have fudged a little, and wrote you for FASTER than you really were? That would blow ALL the math away. Now, in the photo collage, the right lower pic, there is a 68 Biscayne in the background; what's the story there? I know it's now HAMB compliant, but I just bought a 68 Biscayne 4 door sedan to build into a sleeper. Butch/56sedandelivery.

  18. Ya and if it had who knows what for a gear so any math is well who knows...BUT...I do know I was going waaaay faster than my current 124 mph trapspeed at Cordova Drags....anyhoo....Those photos are 25 years old or better.I had bought that 68 6cyl/stick from a buddy it was CHERRY(well the body and interior were, but the frame....) 60 some thou on it....any hoo...I had put new front brakes on it and turned in my drive a little to fast in the rain, hit the brakes, locked up the semibald front skins (tires were in the budget for the next week shoulda done the tires THEN the brakes....a lesson learned) and centerpunched the tree...BIG tree in my front yard....(yes beer was involved...)put the radiator into thr fan so now on sunday afternoon I gotta fix this car cuz I yam a Union Ironworker and was workin in Chi-town at the time and had to make the trip at 3 oclock the next morning....long story short...I chained the back of that 68 to one tree and pulled the radiator support back straight with a comealong from another tree...a buddy had a radiator I bolted in on one side and tie wired the other and off to Chi-town(150+miles) I went...twas a good old car...atree fell on it in a storm,I just drove it anyways (prolly another 6 months till the rusted out frame broke) as it only took out the rear p*** window......I have a pic somewheres....I had alotta good time in that old car..."The Sea buiscuit" I called it....There is one story that is almost unreal but ooooooohhhh soooo true........but that is for another time.....kinda sorry ya asked prolly....sorry sometimes I get longwinded...???longfingered??? I did 154 in my 1970 Challenger a month or so ago, 5500 rpm with a .76 overdrive, 3.23 LSD, and 26" tires. Didn't realize I was going that fast until the shift light turned on when I was in top gear. About a mile down the road after lifting I got lit up by the federales and was ticketed for 95 in a 65. Wasn't sure of the RPM when I got radared.

So 26 years ago a "late model " Camaro would have been a tuned port IROC pile of ****. I had a roll off with one of them back then. My 78 Elky with a mild 350, 3.23 gears and 215 65 15 tires. My best guess is 135 MPH when I left that turd in the dust at 5800 as per the factory tach. So those turds would not go 140 as claimed by chevy.
