I'd enjoy some photos as well. Never saw a channelled car with the frame slipped inside like that..(that I'm aware of anyhow) would be neat to see it slide out again.

Twenty years ago I was allowed into the "32 room" of the massive vintage parts collection of Bobe in Davenport, Iowa. I later learned it was quite an honor to be shown the cars in that room. He hardly shows anybody any of his stuff, but never lets anybody back there. Anyways, amongst his collection of 32 Fords was an old hot rod roadster, painted bright orange with a deeeeep channel. I'm looking this car over pretty good, and he explained how the original subframe is still under there. I peer under the rocker in the dim light, to spy stock Ford sheetmetal, covered in overspray and dirt.

I couldn't help but think how easy it would be for me to bring this "survivor" back up to the top of the frame.

Sam: I know how conflicted you must be. I bought this '34 roadster in '79 and it was channled, had late axle, olds engine, columbia 2spd etc etc. I raised it up and enjoyed the heck out of it.....until lately. I kick myself in the but everytime I think about it now. I know this isn't helping. BUT, you must do what you think is correct at this time. You know what, you can always re-channel it if you want!!!!!! Tim

HRP, Believe me I read every page over and over before my post was added. I really do appreciate your being in Sam's corner along with a few more.
My question is what happened to the days when Old Farts supported each others ideas.
I think Sam is extremely fortunate to have found the car and made the purchase. In his own words he stated that he walked away on the first day but took a second look only to find a prime body with good lower panels. The purchase was then made.
My point was to encourage Sam to follow his dream. It was not my intent to fail to recognize those who were already on Sam's Team.
I can't wait to see the build thread on this car. I sincerely believe that Sam will do the Old Girl Justice..............................Jeff

Im a huge huge survivor hot rod fan, ive done mechanical restorations on 3 survivor hot rods and have a somewhat survivor 32 fordor, all the cars i worked on were in much worse condition than your car, but were all intact, so we just cleaned up some minor fab work, rewired and plumbed rebuilt what needed to be rebuilt etc etc. your car is a neat nice and intact old hot rod so it would be such a hard thing to cut up for me, especially the unchanneling of it, thats the first thing everyone does unchannel thier new 32, 32s were channeled all the time back in the day, why can a few stay channeled. i can understand yanking the fenders and i too would probably really want to redo the front end and front sheet metal as its not the best looking, but would find it hard to do.

    Have fun with your car.

I hope there will be a an UNbuild thread on this car, it would be nice to see the details on how the car was channeled, along with other period build features. Bob

  15. Thanks for sharing. You obviously care about the history or you would not have asked the HAMB for input.

That said, you got it for $20K, I don't see the harm in unbolting some stuff and bringing out some of it's inner beauty. Looks like a Jeepster right now.

As for the unchannel, you could obsess about that last. :)

I might (note might :) ) change my mind. Read the article of Donn Lowe built Buddy Pepp's Roadster on TRJ #21. Not bad being ugly-ectomied...

Wow, that is a beauty. Z'd in the rear still. I really appreciate that picture, almost exactly what I have in mind.

    A small update:
Here is a shot from last Saturday, after the body was sat back down on the frame. I have since removed the front suspension & have a dropped heavy axle mocked up in it. I reversed the front spring last night in my press, looks like she will sit pretty good. Still deciding if I am going back to a stock wishbone or keep them split. My wife has some pics of the unchanneling mayhem, I'll get her to load some of them later.

Next step for the HAMB would be to start some old magazine drives, then you could burn 'em all. Make absolutely sure our disturbing history is buried once and for all. cmon guys, turn in those little pages, make the world a warm and cozy place for neo-traditional hot rodders everywhere.

Funny that whenever an old "ugly" (to some peoples way of thinking) kustom shows up on here, there´s never a shortage of people saying it should be changed/scrapped/pushed off a cliff.

What ardent, fervent, passionate religious zeal! But, Revelation 22:18,19 doesn't apply to old cars

  30. I think its funny that most all, if not all build threads on this site look nothing like the ill-proportioned mess that car was, yet they are all praised and encouraged. If that style is so popular than somebody please build one. The car looks great keep up the good work
