Rear tire question, cheater slick or something else

    Ok so it looks as if I will be picking up a 1963 Dart this weekend, and it is in need for some serious wheel and tire help. It was converted to a straight axle car ( I won't use the term gasser as I don't want to get into that mess), it sets up good in the front , I hope to either run my skinny Aluminum slots up front till I can get my 15x4, or 4.5 Cragar SS, or Team 3 5 spokes. Im hoping to run a15 550 ( open for opinions on that also) But my question at the moment is should I pick up a set of pie crust slicks, or is there another rear tire that would look good on it. I hope to run steelies on it for now. So I guess long story short what would be the hot set up for 95% Street use. Pics are welcome addition, along with pros and cons of your experience. Thanks in advance.

  4. Don't mean to hijack this thread, but are there any cheater slick looking tires (pie crust and flat sidewall) that have tread? Mabye use a tool to tread them yourself?

    DOT cheater slicks. Got mine from Hurst.....Cragars on the front..Hurst cuts the lines in for you.

    I like the look of the hurst, but wanna have black wall, no whites on this ride. So what's a boy to do?

    if you're drivin it on the street, you'll be in a world of hurt with slicks if you encounter wet pavement--just like driving on ice!

    M&H doesn't sell a "traditional" looking cheater slick, but they do sell a nice drag radial. Hurst doesn't only sell whitewall cheater slicks. They sell blackwalls, and all sorts of other various wall styles.
    These are the M&H drag radials on my Austin. They hook better than any street DOT tire I've ever run! 275-60-15 on 8.5" wheels:

    And these are the Hurst 10-30-15 on 8.5" wheels also. They hook well enough to lift the front wheels without heating them up first. Hurst will custom cut a pattern on any slick, so they can be street friendly if you're driving in the wet.:

    There are four guys in my club who run the towel city tires. They've been in the tens on them.
    Also take a look at most MOPAR's from the mid 60's, most ran a taller front tire. Gassers a lot of the time ran the small front tires, but the S/S, FX, match bash cars ran a taller front tire a lot of the time. This isn't a rule and it will look just fine with little ones, but you might like the taller ones too. I ran 6.40 15's on my Chevy II.

    I think a lot of guys switched to taller front tires to improve their rollout. Less chance of redlighting with a taller front tire. Not sure of any other advantage to going taller, unless you need it to change the stance.

    Thanks guys for all the great info. My biggest concern at the moment is trying to figure out if I am gonna need to either cut the B body rear down, or if I can just find some steelies with alot of backspacing that won't look stupid. Does anybody know anybody running a stock B body rear in an A body?

    I run Hurst 30-10-15 cheaters on my model A and drive the shit out of it, rain or not, no problems! If you are worried about it Cody will cut in what ever tread pattern you want for pretty cheap.check this out,,, http://vimeo.com/64682304

    28x11.50 et streets (or 12.50 if it fits) 80 grit will remove all shades of newness...:D

    The stance deal might have been the reason for the stockers and their perception of getting weight to shift by taller tires raising the nose.

    Back in the day, ran cheater slicks w/ 2 little grooves cut in, later had mickey tompson wide tires w/ rows of squigly lines, If you got caught in the rain w/ either tire , you stopped and parked until the rain quit. All my pro-street friends have switched to Hoosier pro street radials, decent in the rain I'm told, and you can get real wide ones if thats your deal. Find out if your state req DOT on tires and make sure what you buying is a legal street tire. A few thoughts for you. Good luck w/ your project, 1/2 the fun is deciding on the parts and pieces. John

    Not to hijack but I have been thinking about putting Hurst pie crust cheaters on the 55 Chevy. I want them to hook up and they sound like they do. Has anyone run them for a substantial period of time on the street? How do they wear if I was just to run them down the street primarily? How many miles would I expect to get out of a pair of these?

    The BIG question is:

    What are you going to be doing with this car?

    Is it a true street car or a race car?

    Are you attempting to make it look like it came from a specific time frame?


    .....and Yes, I have had Hurst Pie Crust on my Coupe with the dirt-track grooves cut into them.
    1. They handled good in the rain for me in my Coupe
    2. They spun and did not hook at the Drag Strip
    3. They are extremely heavy
    4. I had to take mine to a tire shop for Semi's and have the tread shaved until they became round, made me sick to see the pile of rubber on the ground.
    5. Then, one day while washing the car I see that the tires have begun to separate where they are bonded.
    6. I drove the Coupe into my garage, jacked it up, put it on stands, removed both rear wheels.
    7. I replaced them with a new pair of Firestone Fire Hawks the very next day and threw the Hurst's in the dump.

    It's primarily gonna be a street car. Maybe a few. Passes but I don't claim it to
    Be a drag car. It's primarily a stock
    Engine/resto car with a straight axle. That's why I ask what wheel looks period but performs well

    I think I'm gonna stay with 15's, those look nice though. Anybody else wanna chime in with some real world experience ? Recommendations?
