Since many teams started going rear engine in the early 70's, I'd guess it's pre '72, or done to look that way. Beautiful FED! But I saw your thread on the FED build, so I wont say for sure when!

  3. Is the driver even IN the cage?! Nice padding, wait, I can not see any.

Any of us that has dealt with SFI "padding" know it is a joke. In fact a 2x4 will pas the same SFI test. Look at this

    Or this

The only real padding that PADS!

I built it in '95, Legal in all states to 6 seconds
NHRA started to weed out the old cars in '96-7 with the new chassis specs. Most of the old cars built in the 60's wont come close to passing ,so anything you see racing today was built yesterday(somwhat)

  5. For what it is worth at Speedweek this year the tech folks benched a more than one big name due to their cars not passing CURRENT standards. These are cars that have been run for a long time and that was the owners excuse. I applaud the SCTA.

Old pic, the cage has ISP head bumpers and the rear hoop and uprite have the sfi material. Driver has a tendencey to (like most drivers) is to lean their head foward and away from the uprite until the car gets to the tree and then put their head back

Is it possible, or feasible to upgrade these old FED's to meet today's rules, or are they relegated to outlaw tracks, and small events? Or worse yet, museums!!!

I try and get people to have the frame inspected first by NHRA before they buy it if they plan to race it. If it passes(yet fails) because of some minor area tube size or add on update they can usualy run as quick as 7.50. If any main tube fails(bottom rail ,shoulder hoop) then the question presented "Is the time and money worth it,or do we look for something else or even build new"
"REAL" cars that are too old and do not/can not meet specs bring in more value as a museum piece then they would as a race car.
This car here is destine for muesum because most of the frame was built with .035 tubing

I guess museums and private collections need FED's too. Sure is fun to see these old hotrods going down the strip though!

This car has current 7.50 cert. I bought it as a 1964 Woody Gilmore 139" Jr. Fuel car. After closer inspection it looks like a newer build to me. I'm just getting into the fed scene. If anyone could shed some light I'd be more than happy to hear what you think.

Should be a fun car for running NE2 8.50 index.
The chassie will fail cert though (unless it has then the tech screwed up) because it needs some vertical uprites between the foward seat uprite and the rear uprite. The basis is for the tech to be able to run a straight edge touching any two ajoining vertical uprites and not come into contact with the seat.
get rid of the tach, you will never see or use it, shift lite is okay

We rebuilt ,(new front-half, cage and body panels) and raced this Don Long car back in '88, sold it in '90 to some friends who raced it for 12 or 14 years. They had to retire it because of the shoulder hoop size, and that can be an expensive upgrade. It's a shame because it is a straight running, fun car to drive. Blown alcohol, direct drive, it ran mid-7's at 200 like clockwork!

DLong (who just happened to wander into my shop today) cars are highly sought after. He has a list of all the cars he built and a copy of the original invoice. He knows which cars have been located and the ones that crashed/destroyed

What? No MONSTER tach?...........it's sort of killing me too and I think your right, never will see it anyway.
Chassis may have slipped through it was done this year but I would like to remedy the problem. Do you know the wall thickness and diameter of the tubing required?

Did this 67 Jim Davis about 8 years ago. Certified to 7.50. Had to cut the car into quarters, sleeve the butt welds behind the driver, add kidney bars, and a legal cage. I think it looks good for being legal.

    1 1/4 X .058
Somtimes with a Woody chassis, that uprite has to have a bend on the bottom to clear the seat because the rail is tucked in.

Tell you what----Tow your car out here to Calif and I can get it done in a day, How does Thursday sound???

That's pretty funny, I was hoping you could swing by Milwaukee on your way home and zip them in for me, Thursday is fine.

Thanks for your help, I'll put it to use.
