Ok so after years of lurking and gathering thoughts, parts and ideas, I fear it's time to post another build thread (my apologies if im posting on an already overly saturated topic..) For those non-offended, please enjoy! So long story short, the car I had been looking for had literally pulled up to my door step. After a quick bartering and selling everything I own, I finally acquired myself a damn fine 1931 Ford Roadster.. This is how it came off the trailer.. One of the finest originals ive seen. The cab is crazy nice.. some work needed in the usual spots, but a damn nice body.. After searching chassis builders here on the hamb, I couldnt have been any more pleased to have contacted Gary Maxwell.. The threads you'll find on here about Blackboard hotrods all stand true.. You'll have a hard time finding a nicer, more talented guy than Gary.. He puts out a damn nice product, and exceptionally helpful! My buddy Josh's '56 Lincoln and my creepy dog Sammy in the back.. Doesnt get much better! I drug the chassis to work, and set the body on the frame and mocked up some cardboard wheels to kinda get an idea of ride-height.. So after mocking up the rear end with the leaf hangers Gary provided me with, i realized Im far from the height i was thinking of.. I was stuck for a couple of days wondering how to get the rear at the height i was picturing.. So i took Gary's hangers, and modified them a tad... Made the leaf hangers adjustable.. This should work out well being able to adjust right height and spring rate at the same time.. Spent some time on the lathe after work, and came up with some mounting studs to use Cory Taulberts early bung ends.. After mocking up the frame to the desired wheel base, I bored out enough material to slip the sleeves for the perches through.. the bones are off a '46 lincoln.. Heavy duty!
I was able to get full weight on the front and clamp the spring into position.. This clocked the perches correctly so they dont bind, and i was able to set the caster and mark the mounting location of the wishbones through the frame.. (For all you welders..) We all know welding truly is a 'technique'! After sitting on my ass, then trying to control the pedal with my elbow, I gave up and grabbed the fork lift.. Still, it was damn hard weaving the torch in and out of the cross member.. phssh.. chassis-47.. Jon-0 All suspension done and read to be a roller.. Coming together ..XiX.. SFFS @ 5pm the shop seems to be a ghost town... No worries! Oh fork lift! How i love you!! (This photo proceeded with a 2 hour grinning from ear-to-ear stare session..) Please enjoy! Jon
Dang, looks good. Seems to be coming together quickly. Good for you. Enjoy it and keep us posted. Great start so far!
Yeah man. The shop rules, and your roadster is coming out exceptional. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Damn that's slick!!! The stance is really cool especially with what looks to be a little taller tire up front.
Jon, this car is going to be so fucking cool... I'm glad you posted a thread about it here! Very very nice work so far. I really like your wishbone mounts and the early Ford tie rod ends. I don't recall if you've mentioned it before - what engine/trans are you planning to use? Thanks for the offer on the shop visit, too. If I make it out there for the GNRS in January, I'll get ahold of you and stop by. Malcolm
I like where this is going, just subscribed! Where did you get your springs? might take some guess work out of a up coming project.
very non-typical new build. It looks channeled at a very quick glance, so it really looks like an old build....especially a rear 3/4 view pic. And like was said about the bigger front tire; also reminds us of the old builds the way they looked.
The lincoln is a car we're building for a client.. This bad-boy and an coyote are going under it.. Not really HAMB 'worthy' but very cool none-the-less..
Im not.. I had forecasted going with gloss black wheels, then thought the burgundy contrasted the bare metal nice and was period for the car.. Im thinking of a tan/beige/puddy-ish kinda color for the car.. it'll be a little while so i have time to think it through haha.. Nick... thank you thank you thank you for the kind words! I guess i shouldve mentioned, it's gonna be powered by a 1958 364 nailhead.. Others love the factory buick color, but the decision has been made.. it's going gloss black!
