Hello everyone, just joined the site and wanted to post my current build. I purchased a 48 KB-1 pickup and drug her out of the trees. No box, glass is trashed, rusty floor and front cab corners.. all around, pretty beat up. As of now I have repaired the rust, set it on an s10 frame, dropped in a stock 5.3 liter out of a suburban paired with a built th400 with a shift kit. Pulled the old rear end out and dropped in a ZR2 blazer limited slip rear with 3.23 gears and disc brakes. Built a new floor and trans tunnel. For the steering I used a 69 camaro column and modified the shaft using one u-joint. I used a modified s10 brake system running through a 68 bronco master cylinder. Currently installing wiring harness. Mostly done, starts, charges but needs lights yet. Here are a few pictures of the build. Hope you enjoy it! Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
I like the IHC truck but its obvious your front wheelbase is much narrower than the rear. The 4x4 s10's have a wider wheel base. I used stock frame with M11 IFS.
Thanks guys, appreciate the feedback. Jazz1, I know it looks a little funky now and if I would have had the money when I started this project I would have done the same as you. I'm gonna try to make it up in the offset of the final wheels and see if I can't get it to look better Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
If you have any "spare" KB parts you are not using, might post up over on the: oldihc.org Might even find some parts if you need them. There is a section for the modified KB. Lloyd Admin oldihc
Nice looking KB. What Radiator did you use? My 1941 K-2 is on a S-10 with a Scout 2 rear axle (bolt pattern redrilled) and 1.5" wheel spacers up front. I have done 2 on S-10 frames and the next one will be on the stock frame.
LBESQ I tried posting my build on there, however, the site said it had been hacked and been destroyed? I have lots of parts but have 2 other pickups so ill never know when I might need something else. Here is one of my other pickups All original with 50k miles. No rust and minor dents and dings Terraizer - love the old binder in your profile picture. Do you have any more pictures of the build? I used one of the universal rat rod radiators that griffin makes now out of summit racing. Didnt get a built in cooler either. It measures 16" x 22" overall... Cools great. Like I did before, if I had the money I would have done a Mll and boxed the whole frame instead. I got the s10 frame for $50 bucks so can't complain too much haha! Here is a pic of my 1948 KB-1 with Knox bed that is also on a S-10 frame, its got a Scout 2 dana 44 rear, 360 Dodge and 727 and am useing a 1965-66 aftermarket mustang radiator. I will have to find some recent pics of the 1941 K-2 on the computer but the big wheels on it may get me boo'd off the site if i post pics of it. The S-10 frame is nice but just not worth the extra work with trying to fit everything and getting everything where it needs to be, i would think starting with the stock frame and just adding to it may be easier and cleaner, my KB1 didn't have a frame when i got it so i didn't have that option, it was a cab and front clip a buddy picked up some where, and the bed came from another buddy in Missouri, its been built out of left overs.
Since you guys are in CO, there are a couple '47-48 KBs on CraigsList for $1500 with titles--for the pair. Probably some good parts.
If you used to be registered on the Oldihc site before Jan 1 2013 You will need to re-register. Use the link I put in my first post, it will give you links to the other areas. These are great trucks, and I know of a fellow who put a KB1 cab on a 1 ton ford with a Diesel in it. The Cab looks like it goes there.
I love the look of both pickups you have. So you're sayin I best not put my 18's on and post pictures? Haha.. I agree definitely its more work than what it's worth. You takin anything to the kbpi car show this weekend? Thanks guys, I will register again on oldihc and post the build there. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Ya i would definitely go with offsets on the front as opposed to wheel spacers. Your green K model looks great,,what does it need...tags?? That truck looks ready to roll! It is a lot of work using the s10 frame,,I considered it with one of my other trucks and bailed on it because my box was totally restored and I did not want to have to alter the floor
Haha thanks jazz1.. It just needs a master cylinder then it's ready to go. Everything is original besides the seat and tires. Been garaged it's whole life. I'm wantin to finish up this other build first. I wouldn't have messes with it either if I was in your position. Takes a lot to get these old binder beds straight! Sweet project. I thought I was gonna be using a 5.3 in my 46' K3 but the deal fell through. I'm now trying to score a 6.0L/4L80E combo for it. I used Jaguar XJ6 front and rear suspension in my build. I'm looking for some rear fenders if you happen to have extras??? lol I know, but thought I would ask anyway. Good luck with the project.
That 6.0 will run well in there. I tell you mine will leave a hell of a set of black marks! I just finished up bleeding the brakes and filled up the tranny so i could take her for the first drive last thursday. Are you gonna go efi or carb? If you need any LS swap stuff or have any questions about it im more than willing to help. Sorry but Unfortunately I don't have spare rear fenders. I looked for almost a year to just get my bed and rear fenders I have now (granted I didn't try terribly hard). These binder beds are hard to come by it seems and when you find one the fenders and tailgate look like they had a date with a stump grinder. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Iron Maiden, K/KB-3 rear fenders are wider then the K/KB-1 and K/KB-2 rear fenders keep that in mind when you go looking for fenders.
Not to my knowledge. K1-3 used the same cab, grille, hood, and fenders. The 3 has the 8.5' bed though. My truck was 100% original and the rear fenders were the same as the smaller trucks. I wish It did though, wider rears would be nice. '48IHC, I'm running EFI. I will cam the motor and run longtube headers but that's about it. What swap parts were you referring to?
Just Any adapters and part numbers and such.. Pretty common to find it all on the Internet now it seems.. You will be runnin some decent numbers when you get that cam in there with a tune to match. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Glad to see another binder in the mix. I used a welder series M II x member with a standard belly button 350/350 combo. I spent a long time looking for a decent grill as the one on mine had been in too many fights. All you guys building these binders of the '40's era know how hard good sheet metal and grills are to come by. One good thing about the binder sheet metal when you cut out the rust you got nice thick steel to weld to. Good looking trucks you have there '48IHC.
What wheels and tire sizes are you using? I like the way your KB1 sits. I haven't decided what I'm going to use for my 46 K1 but leaning toward steelies or Torque Thrust somethings. I'm using a stock frame but with Explorer rear and MII front.
What is this MmII you guys are talking about? I dont really know a whole lot about these trucks yet. I know my tag says kb1.
Thanks degenerate I appreciate it! I hear ya on the grills and sheet metal. I got lucky and found a 49 grill in the junkyard so I snagged it for my 48. My 49 in the pics is perfect and I picked up another one I found (a 41) so it's de-stainlessed but it is also immaculate just sitting in the garage. Never know when you will need another binder grill! Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
we are referring to Mustang 11 independent front suspension kits. This is my Fatman M11 kit. Custom cut crossmember and tophats so just weld in place and bolt on the rest,,a-arms, rack and pinion steering,
very nice truck---mine is a 48 with a 350-350, 72 must. 9" and stock frontend, with original modified radiator
Thank you silversink I appreciate it! I'm gonna try to shorten my bed before the weekend and take it to the first show! Do you have any pics of yours? Engine bay? Interior? Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
