Another big batch of fascinating racecar transporters from the garage areas of yesteryear... More Vintage Racecar Transporters | Mac's Motor City Garage.com
An observation of the above photo of the then year old Kuzma roadster. Al Dean owned a fleet of semi tractor trailers for his van lines business but didn't find it necessary to haul his race cars in one. Unlike today.
Mr. Dean has been gone since 1967. My observation was that one of the best funded teams of the era, with all of it's resources including semi truck trailers, choose to haul their race cars on a single axle trailer with a Merc. wagon. They were a top tier champ car operation with 3 national titles in the fifties. As mentioned nobody goes to "The Speedway" or any other champ car event without a semi or two, spare cars, engines, plus motor homes etc. Just a different era where extravagance for the sake of it was not revered.
Good point. At the local oval tracks and drag strips we see all these semis and toter homes, with everyone complaining how costs are too high. Doesn't make a lot of sense.
I remember seeing this rig as a little tyke. With the Dart's rainbow paint job, naturally it made an impression on my young little eyeballs. If I am not mistaken, when Garlits got the car I think he got the truck, too
love seeing vintage photo(s) of how they transported their vehicle(s) back in the day seemed to be more of an art forum than hauling their vehicle(s) around to the next race ..
Saw that rig a few times in person back in the day. I wonder how many Little Red Wagons there were over the years.
