Meltdown Drags is my personal favorite event. It just oozes cool and is such a blast. I love the track, cars and friendly folks that put it on. I'm working hard to have my new car ready for next year.

I'm going to sure do my best! If you pm your phone# I will text you some pics as it progresses. Still have a ways to go but it's getting there.
I like Meltdown so much I'm going to have an extra chunk just to swap gears to run 1/4 mile there.

Really depends on what engine you use. Since the Gas classes didn't require you keep the original engine, then a swap from a SBC or 6 cyl. to a hemi or some big block would make fitment an issue when trying to not go more than 10% setback and keep a radiator. Before any engine placement rules, guys moved their engines anywhere to fit, and some cars became unsafe at times with engines sitting too far back, or too high.

Thanks Rotten! Gonna shoot you a pm.

  11. I don't get threads like this one!
Gassers are like porno, I know one when I see one!
The term means something different now than it did in the 60's, it's kinda just academic at this point. Gassers filled a niche between street cars and all out race cars then, now they have nothing to do with current racing or current cars do they?
Jeez, it isn't that hard, look at the rules from the period you are imitating, buy some magazines, and build it the way you like!

  12. I agree with what you are saying - to a point. If it becomes too far removed from what a gasser was, then don't freaking call it a gasser - call it what ever you want, but don't try and change history.
It would be like showing up at a Gettysburg reenactment with the proper clothes and an AK47 and saying you are portraying a Civil War Soldier - No you're not

(this wasn't aimed at you Gary, just used your quote to make the point)

  13. I think we are agreeing, but "gasser" has become a generic term.
It sure doesn't have much to with what it meant 50 years ago! I guess those that weren't there will never really get it. I can't blame them for that though, we are all a product of our times.
Then was then, now is now.

  15.
  16. In the end I will make my own choices but early influence will certainly help.

  17. Good. That's the only thing TO do!
    So here's my take then.
Full upholstery, something like tuck and roll, or buttons.
Roll bar. Not super jacked up.
Straight axle optional, 4 wheel brakes. MAKE it safe.
Any engine from whatever period you are simulating, MOST gassers ran SBC's, ( oh no), but put ANYTHING you like in it!
Maybe a FE Ford? Olds? Pontiac? A MoPar wedge?
Mags or steel wheels, mags go in front.
As for tires and all the rest, just be safe and read some old magazines.
Oh, and paint it candy red!
    Whatever!:)

  19. Welllll. If it is candy anything it's a plus! EXTRA points for tangerine, root beer or purple! We'll let ya in. ;)

  20. Tangerine sounds tasty! I havent had had an orange car in almost a decade.

  21. If that is your car in your avatar, you KNOW what a gasser is!

  22. 26 coats, hand rubbed. Blue Coral on top.

Hey Dirty Dave any more plans on how you are going to do yours?

  24. Yeah, the Hudson is a cool looking car, I'm curious as to how things are shaping up.

If Dave hasn't gotten scared by all the replies, I'm sure he'll do great with this build! ;)

  26. Car is sitting in the barn awaiting a plan. Seems like I need to determine what V8 engine makes the most sense. Finding a stronger rear should be straight forward. Ladder bars and fender headers will be fun to fab. Plenty of good consistent advice on here regarding interior.

  27. I guess a picture might add something.

  28. Looking good man! Can't wait to see your progress, this is an interesting build.
