I just got a car blasted in IL. The mobile blaster that did it required that you stay on site while he worked to discuss any problem areas. Great policy. I told him how much money I had based on the over the phone quote and told him to go that long, wish I had more money that day.
I think I'd treat the bad spots, paint it and move on. You can remember the lesson as you continue on in the project.
Hard to believe someone would pickup and deliver, provide the materials, AND do the blasting for that kind of price. His labor rate probably worked out to be minimum wage.
Y'all have got to come down to TX. There's deals like that all over little to no over head and high sales volume work hand in hand. And yes cheap labor is all over.... Wonder y???
That is all there is to it! The job is not DONE! Hell... Stevie Wonder could see it wasnt done!! Doesnt matter what he paid, UNLESS... The guy said he wouldnt do a 100% blast on it and the customer agreed to that.
Amen. This buy, use, get only the most expensive anything mindset is ridiculous. Price is a factor especially if you pay too much. Checking into previous work, product and out come is a must, if possible. If you're dissatisfied take it back 'til you get the results claimed.
when we blasted frames it was by the hour , no quotes as you do not know what you were getting into untill you started , semi flatbeds were the worst unless the deck was removed , and often we blasted at night as doing it in the day even under a shelter roof . it got hot in the suit . and if you left axles on it there was a surcharge . and we wouldn't blast springs either ( sets them up for stress cracking ) at 85 a hour your lucky you broke even as the compresser used almost that much in fuel . as for sheet metal , never will blast with sand or walnut , it gets the metal too hot and warps it , soda is the only medium for paint removal and then you still have to sand it to get the primer to bite .
I saw the before and after of a 55-59 chevy cab that was done by a portable blasting guy down here. cleaned off everything, even up under the dash. good job $800 I'd say you got what you paid for. And NTX Customs ROCKS !

you know.....i sandblast for a living and i tell you.... its hard work. compressors break. blasters malfunction and delivery times change... be greatful he picked it up and delivered it.. and what you should have done was ask him to come over and look at it...I'm sure he would have touched it up for free. when you are suited up and carrying a 150 lb hose around you might miss a few things.. on the other hand..you could spend $18,000 on blasting equipment, do something you love (bringing old cars back from the grave) and be blasted by someone on the internet that doesn't even work in your trade (or would have done it himself) because of a small oversight. i miss stuff too...and i welcome someone to look over my work and point it out... i would rather fix it than be put down Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. CDcustoms....we blast for a living to. And yes all suited up in a very dusty booth you can miss a few spots. But really, on a frame with nothing on it...that's bad QC.
Yup. It seems, that NTX, and my blaster, are better at checking their work, and making sure that it is right, than they are at making excuses. There are two states of existence for a job being done in the business world: done, and not done. Not done, is not done. Delivered, not done = failure. As a shop owner, and builder, I do not pay good money for failure. The blaster had ONE JOB to do, and it is not done. He can eat the transport, to and from, but pay him for the extra time (if billing was hourly). Never excuse, or reward, failure. Be better than that.
Tyler, if that's Bibs car, that was one of the best blast jobs I have had the pleasure of working on. There was not one spot missed on that car. I have had customers bring me cars from other places, and they weren't near as clean as this was. What ever NTX Customs charges, it is worth every penny. Sure saved me a lot of work!
Since I no longer have a home shop and have to outsource everything I called for a quote on a car frame today , $500 bucks to blast it and 3 weeks wait time , and I have to truck it 40 miles away from me . my local blaster is out of business , too many complaints about the dust and noise . even with a vac set up in a industrial park .
Tim, not Bib's but it is another HAMBer on here, I'll let him chime in if he sees the post. We blast everything like we were going to work on it ourselves. I think it may be time to do another HAMB auction by the way....
Obviously you do quality work and have the right attitude in running your business. You do the QC before returning the item to the customer. No excuses. Wish you were in Wisconsin. Congratulations on running your business professionally.
ntxcustoms... i never said it was ok to be sent out that way... i just said sometimes things are missed.. i own and operate my hot rod shop and personally inspect and re-inspect every item that goes out of there.. you are correct quality control is a-1 top priority and that guy slipped up. maybe he was having a bad time in his life or something..we dont know the circumstances... i am just the type of person to resolve a problem rather than blast it out into the atmosphere customer satisfaction is our main attraction! from our louvers to paint and body to fab...it HAS to be perfect... you do very nice work, keep it up.. have a great one hamb-ers Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. Sorry for the late response. Ive been busy sandblasting and painting the past week...til I ran out of paint. Final coat goes on when another quart shows up in the mail from SPI. Sunday was 106, sure made me wish I had a blasting suit with cool fresh air pumping into the hood. I use one of those bunny suits that don't breathe and a p100 mask like in that tv show Breaking Bad. Thanks for the offer ntxcustoms, but I just took care of the work myself since I already got the paint and sandblasting equipment here. Now that Ive gone back to school and it just started, I don't have time after this weekend and just needed to get it to a stopping point where I can put a tarp over it until December. Well my girlfriend mentioned that she asked "whats this black stuff all over the frame" when they delivered it, and was told it's bare metal! I know some of you are giving this guy the benefit of the doubt, but that's just unacceptable. This thread was started to find out whether or not missed spots are OK on a frame that someone paid money to a professional to sandblast (since it was my first time hiring a sandblast shop). After getting my big compressor setup and sandblasting it myself, Ill say that NO spots are OK to be left for someone who sandblasts for a living. All you have to do is lift your hood and check your work if the lens gets too dusty. I called the guy & chewed on him a little, and he offered to 'refund some of my money' as he said. Not interested in how much, but I did say that was kind of him. Those of you who were asking how much of the frame was spotty: the pictures I took were two random close-ups, not just some bad spots. Basically every joint, bend, or 3D surface was still black with paint, or rusty (where I didnt knock off the rust with my angle grinder before) except the bottom, which was 90% untouched and the frame had surface rust on the ends where sweaty hands touched on it. Long story short: the work was unacceptable, even if fairly priced; and now I know what acceptable blasting work looks like after doing it myself.
now....that does sound like shoddy work.... all we saw was the pics.... needs to be clean and corrosion free for a top notch rebuild... thanks for yhe update... i would avoid him too. Chad Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
All Im saying, after materials and ect. I personally wouldn't sand blast a frame for less then a hundred dollars, Its pretty shitty job at times. But id just go through a sand those spots out or something
