I like to see nostalgia cars that are fairly unmolested but the problem can be passing modern day tech at tracks today. My altered is set up basically as it was when it was built in the 70's with the exception of some electronics but I have to admit it needs more updating to be safe.

  4. Of course cars need to be safe. We can't run three point cages and chassis made of exhaust tubing. IF you were around in the 60's you would know that a whole lotta guys were hurt and killed then.
Nobody is stopping anybody from building anything are they. But the N/TF guys won't stop their brand of racing either.

Are there any build threads on HAMB style cars here on the board.

Don't think anyone was saying to build junk for the sake of a period looking car. You can still build one that looks the part while still being safe and passing tech. Southern Slingshots for example.

No one said they were going to stop their brand of racing, and this thread was not intended to be a TF bashing thread. Thread does make it obvious that those willing to post would rather see a slower period car and match racing, than modern NTF cars.

  10. To answer your original question...
i LOVE the 'modern' AA/FD class.

i've been a drag racer for every second of my 40 years on earth. i grew up with a funny car in my garage and FEDs were king. i got into the nostalgia bit many years ago and we ran the VRA series until it collapsed.

all that being said, although i lament the 'modernity' of the AA/FD, there is no replacing the sheer thrill of a front motor car on nitro, flat out.

    I can dig that..

  12. Well yeah Scott, I for one would as well. read my posts on the NTF thread, which I assume inspired your question.

    It shr did. That obvious..huh?....lol

Guess if I want to see the type of racing I like....will need to seek out more of the smaller shows.

Really wish I could have made it to the HAMB drags. Not sure my car would pass muster though...since it was built more for tech at an NHRA track.
Need to put it on my calendar for next year.

  15. Please note! WHEELS, as usual can make or break the car.
One thing a period dragster must have is spoked wheelsQ

Who cares?! The point is, you'll be out there doing smokies and making passes with it.
The people in the stands are going to love it.

I'll tell you what; you need to go to the Meltdown Drags. That's a kick-ass show, and when I left there, I decided to put on The Gear Jam.

I covered it for Hot Rod Deluxe, so it was "work" that brought me there. I'm planning on going next year, without my camera, just to have fun and enjoy the show.
And if the Scheduling Elves work with me, I might actually have a car to race there.

I'd be more than happy to caravan up there with you.

  18. The crowds are huge and we have a ball. Rocky and the group At Eagle Airfield run a similar deal. We have learned somehow to replace bigger louder faster shinier with just plain good.
    Don

Can't agree with ya more Don, its the most fun you can have with your clothes on. It brings back the teenager in us all and racing for the fun of it is all right with me, even in slow 60year old engines, sometimes we even put on a show for the spectators who show up and brave the dust. To me racing beats looking every time, but looking isn't bad either. The amount of imagination and work that goes into HAMB dragsters and the stuff that shows up at Eagle beats the high dollar corporate stuff to me anytime. JMHO.......:D
See ya all on 0ct 6th.........

Gonna bow to ur expertise here. Gotta question and your the perfect person to ask.

Kind of hard to tell from the angle of those pics......but how does the kick up at the back of the car compare to a car like the Old Master?

On the OM the shoulder hoop has another bend at the rear end uprite going down whereas this car (built '95) and others built around '67 up did not bend and continued on the same angle as from the motor plate.
As you look into the history and era of these cars, mid 60's driver were not that tall and most comming out of military service were about 135# and look at us now as we see (in my case at least) 6' 180-200#'s. Also look at the equipt we have-- -20 suits and helmets that are 1 1/2" bigger then the skull caps and tin-foil worn in the 60's. I know P-Wood who has the OM and thert is no way on this earth that I could get my driver even close to fitting in that car.

Guys...PM me any pics of your car if your wondering about the Meltdown...we do have criteria for PERIOD CORRECT appearing drag racing....with 400+ cars this year...and NO CENTERLINES, WELD, Pro stars, etc one site (except on 4 nitro cars) that is a feat in itself..... The Meltdown is NOT a Nostalgia event.....it is a VINTAGE DRAG meet!! Brad, thanks for the kind words man.....we missed you this year! Better get there early next year or you might have to pit at the golf course a 1/2 mile down the road..LOL.
Search the Meltdown Threads here on the hamb for details...be happy to give info to anyone just PM me!!!

nostalgia drags with the pits full of toterhomes

  27. the talk of a slower gas or alch class is great now go sell it to a promoter. good luck with that. the fans want nitro. nitro anything. they want ground pounding nitro and the alch and gas wont do it. the fans know it and the track owners now it now you know it to. i can find entertainment with just about any type of race car. just dont try to sell me a watered down version of it.

  28. If a guy had desirable match race car or two-car show... what does a promoter pay to show up?

Tow money? Free entry fee? $500?

Heres the deal with match races--- they must be advertized inorder to reach out to people that would not ordinarly be there. For him to just give you money to run infront of the normal Sat night crowd takes money out of his wallet. Free entry makes those that have to pay an entry feel cheated.

So he offers $1000 for the show and both must run 3 rounds. he now has to spend money to advertise your matchrace and at least get 150 extra fans to show up that would not normally be there just to break even . 50 @$20 to pay your fee and another 100 @ $20 to pay ($2000) for the advertising. Plus what will make matters worse is if he did pay you and you wind up dumping the engine or trans out at 600' first round.
