Guys, I'm wanting to switch to a firewall mounted master cylinder since I'm upgrading to power anyway, and I just thought I'd see what everyone else likes. I'm at a crossroads myself. It's a custom, so I hate lifting the hood on it anyway, but certain shows require it. I can get a chrome one for as much (if not cheaper!) than a plain one, and I'm not quite sure if I like the looks of one. Putting one in and then changing my mind might be a bit of a headache! Any of you guys lean one way or the other with it? This is one of those questions where even though everyone has an opinion (like something else) it's good to get them! Just thought I'd see what yall think! Thanks!

Unless you plan on going nuts with chrome under the hood it's going to be out of place.

Why not post a photo of your engine bay? HRP

As HRP said it depends on what else is going on under the hood. Sometimes plain blends in better and makes things look less cluttered.

the real question is, do YOU like chrome or not? never build a car for someone else, build it like it'll never be judged at a show. personally if i went to a car show that mandated my hood to be open, i'd drive home

If it is the only chrome thing under the hood it will stand out and not in a good way. But if you have lots of other things plated it would fit right in.

Sometimes a nicely painted and detailed underhood area can look just as good as lots of shiny stuff under there........sometimes better.

  6. That thread with the 62 Chevy & 409 engine bay comes to mind.
    Simple and simply beautiful.

There is no denying that the Hamb is visually driven,a photo accompanying a question generally will bring thoughtful reply's and no one has to formulate a mental image and play guessing games.

Chrome or painted master cylinder,if that's about all the chrome under the hood it's gonna be like a chandelier in a outhouse,,no offense intended. HRP

If you paint it body color, make sure you use synthetic brake fluid, chrome will stand up to regular brake fluid.

Not the best picture, but this is the only one I have right now. View attachment 2021743
Here's a pic from when I first got it. ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1378228951.646731.jpg It's pretty much the same, cept all that clashing red and blue has all been painted black. The Moroso valve covers have been replaced by these: ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1378228974.280429.jpg and the air cleaner is back to a chrome one for now. I also don't care for my chrome alternator bracket and will probably change it for a black one when I go to a generator. I plan on going to a small body HEI, so I wouldn't mind a chrome coil. I'm running rams horns that're rattle canned aluminum, but I'd like to ceramicoat them, or at the very least POR them. I might even get some of them shiny Corvette style heat shields that go around the plugs/exhaust. I'm funny. I like chrome, but then I don't. Just like I want some parts of my car to be stock and others I can't wait to customize. I just didn't lean one way or the other on it and I thought you guys might swing me in one direction. Thanks!

I prefer plain (clear coated) or painted, but with a chrome top. A little chrome mixed with painted parts gives a nice contrast.

I don't even know what to say. I was expecting a semi detailed engine bay. I don't know if I would even notice a chrome master cylinder with what you have going on. I have always liked a painted master cylinder with the chrome cover but that just me.

I think the OP's engine bay looks semi-detailed. It isn't street-roddy, in that
there's a lot of OEM firewall busyness painted black, but it seems (somewhat) squared away.

I would suggest skipping the chrome master cylinder. HRP

Remember CHROME is a 6 letter word that soon turns into a 4 letter word RUST.

I wouldn't draw attention to it.

Brake fluid was hard on the paint; my reason to go with chrome.
