Sounds like you've really thought it out well Ryan. My coupe being mostly traditional parts/styling may fall short of a home here because of the air ride but that's o.k if it happens. Its your site, your dream and your rules and I can live with that.

One thought, it would be cool if the technical threads could be somehow divided into say things like: Mechanical, Fabrication, maybe some specific area for things like welding/machining threads. One thing I see on here a lot is posts directed at things "trade" oriented and some of the replies are from left field, it would be nice to have a designated area where people in those fields could do some proper, knowledgeable posts on a particular subject instead of some who just want to increase their post count without actually having credible knowledge. Just a thought.

Keep up the great work and congrats to the new mods.

  2. I haven't looked at the split forums yet. I HAVE noticed a huge lack of the sort of inane posts that drive a lot of us crazy. IMO, that simple clean up, which I guess is due to having more mods, was all you need, Ryan. But, if the other way feeds your passion, full speed ahead, man. I've been around for a while, I'll hang out and see what happens. Focus is a good thing.

I think this will work out fine. My only question is: Will pre 65 bone stock cars and trucks and discussions concerning them still be welcome in the general forum?

I don't have one anymore but did talk about it here on occasion.

Thanks for a great place to visit.

I like focus. My concern is that it will take that much longer to review new material since I have to now scope out three separate forums. Could the focus have been achieved by keeping all threads on one forum and using thread labels to designate hot rod and custom? Splitting hot rods and customs into separate forums seems like it helps those who mostly like one or the other.

I think spilting the two, will split the HAMB and not be good. (seen it before) but hope it all goes well.

Where do you want event coverage.. (general discussion?)

  9. Who it really helps is the guy that wants to look at build threads or the tech stuff. Wanna look at customs go there. Wanna lookcat hot rods go there. Now you dont have to wade threw the other post.

What "Post Traditional" section? If there is one, why even do the changes he did? Might as well have a rat rod section. I wouldn't expect to see any 'post traditional" cars.

Until this all gets explained further, my best course of action is to watch the wondering, crying and validation threads. I'm also expecting a whole new crew of Traditional Police to come running in. "HANDS AGAINST THE WALL, MOFO!":D

I do know what it is. I'm asking the same type of questions everyone else is going to be asking? If there's a place where all the "grey areas" are defined, I'd like to know where it is.

I dig the HAMB. Sometimes though, I've hated it. Mostly(?) yeah, great place. BUT, the above quote IS the main rub I've had with this place since I joined (back in the 50's). I've never been the type who is tightly wound about period correctness or what the old mags tell us. Not that I discount them, nope, I love our history, but I will always let creativity trump over historical accuracy. To that end, if the HAMB becomes too militant, EASY, I'm out (without a whimper). Loosely guided(?), I'll be around.

    Sweet!

I've always guessed there were only 51 traditional hot rods here, now it will be easy to get a true count. I think I guessed short.

Ryan is most likely tired of reading by now but I will post my cents.
Everybody here relax and take a deep breath.
It's not like Ryan is trying to reinvent his own wheel. It's more like he's putting some air in the old tire so we can all get some more milage out of it.
Best of everything to you and the new crew Ryan. Thanks for all your effort.
    Torchie.

  18. I wonder where the dragsters and other purpose built racers are? All I saw in the beta Hot Rod Forum were race cars built from production cars.

I think I am going to like it the way it is now,I was a little concerned since I do not own what would be a traditional hotrod but modified old cars I would be forced to leave so the general discussion area is where I will be most of the time.

  20. Wow! I have trouble following all the stuff on this forum. Now there's 2 more!! I need more time.

As you know, I dig a lot of that stuff myself, especially the circa '66-'68 T buckets. I've started several threads on those cars in the past, knowing that, in the strictest sense, they were off-topic. But I figured that the way things were before, they were a hell of a lot closer to the spirit of the HAMB than 80% of the other threads.
My attitude is that if we are gonna get this place on track, sacrificing stuff like that is worth it, and not only am I "ok" with it, I am all over it, and if the place is going to truly be about traditional hot rods, and not street rods with red smoothies and WWW radials, on balance, I am happy to trade that kind of borderline stuff away in the bargain.

lots of casualties, move over gettysburg

will the moderators be going through the alliance vendors to get them to stop selling parts that make our cars non-traditional?

    good point,
I ran into the same question when we put together the Build Thread Index in the Tech Archive

I dropped them to the bottom and attached titles like competition coupe, lakester and dragster

without a separate forum I would think they belong in hot rod

You didn't read the post, huh? General Discussion.

Worry about you and I'll worry about everyone else. I'm working on it. Promise.

Honestly, you prolly won't like the changes much. We are gonna be more militant than we have in the past. No hard feelings though.

Race cars are hot rods in my book!

Why would we do that? That's... umm... sort of ridiculous. :)

Ryan, it's not "young guys" that piss me off, it's young guys who try to tell me what is and isn't "traditional"' when I LIVED THOSE YEARS.
Regions can also have a lot to do with it. Drag strips were almost non existent in GA till the 60s, and the hot rod scene here took on an entirely different character, oval tracks were about the only legal racing, although there was plenty of street racing and also the race to keep your freedom if you were a "tripper" with a load of shine. Either way, you better be able to run fast, hard and handle thru the twisty 2 lane roads of the day when "John Law" was after you. This meant wider wheels and bigger tires on the front also to "get a bite" in the turns and curves, as skinny tires and wheels understeered so bad you'd just go straight when you tried to turn at high speeds.
Styling was different also as the "East Coast" channeled without a chop instead of the chopped tops of the "Left Coast". Air bags on the Western custom cars for lowereing were pretty much unheard of here, but "Air Lift" bags in the rear of a "Tripper" car were a way to keep the dead giveaway of a tail high car seen at other times sitting level because of a load of shine.
I fought the ohv V8s till the late 50s with a 3/8X3/8 Merc in a '32 3 wdw, in street racing and won about as often as I lost, so Yes, I have followed tradition in my life also. But "tradkitional can be different for different regions and people.

Just exactly what do you expect from a guy who spent a lifetime working in oilfields, construction, auto assembly plants, and machine shops, has the username "dirty old man" and a signature line speaking of being a "proud member of the Sock Fuckers Car Club"??????????

Well, the HAMB has a year limit. But drag racing's best years go a little past '65. The most colorful characters and the most fascinating times go up to, I dunno, '69...'72. Certainly the best of the Funny Cars wars. Experimentation with fuels, the weirdest and most beautiful paint jobs, all the wild creativity of that time. You've allowed the subject mater to drift to include early Indy roadsters, so I'm sure you will find a way to include the best years of the digs. When the old racers that I know get a few drinks in them, those are the stories that come out. Please make your rules flexible enough to allow them.

    Haha... I like your style.

I don't disagree... but post-65 is not what this forum is about.

personally i think split forums is a great idea! i have long waved the customs flag on here with a build thread, event coverage and a yearly thread on customs that i saw that year. since customs are the small minority on here (just like everywhere in general) custom threads tend to drop quickly when mixed in on a primarily hot rod forum. now custom guys will be able to find and track custom threads more easily. as for the hot rod guys, there will be less clogging up the hot rod forum (for those who claim they don't care about customs) and for those hot rodders that want, you can click on and check out the customs anytime you want. win-win!
