Projects Project '47 Nash

Well, small update. Progress has been made. We pulled the head on Wed and took a peak inside. cylinders look GOOD. Head looks GOOD. Some light scoring on the walls but I think we'll be fine with a cylinder hone. 2 stuck valves, rusted in the 'up' position. They're Wd40'ing this week to see if they close on their own. Engine rotates around like butter.. Head gasket was even in great shape upon examination. Whatever took this car off the road, I don't think it was an engine problem. Bottom end inspection is next. We didn't get her up on the stand. No fine thread bolts! So, on the picker she sits.. Next update should see the oil pan off to look at the rods/mains.
We also moved the car to the middle of the garage and started getting her up on jackstands for hibernation/rust repair.
ODD: Passenger lugnuts spin off counterclockwise as they should. Drivers side, CLOCKWISE. WTF?? someone install the studs backwards or is this normal for a car of this era?

that is normal for some cars! My '66 Chrysler has reverse thread lugnuts on one side, I dang near broke one trying to get them off the first time.LOL.
that would make one seriously cool taildragger. Good luck on the projext, hope to see it next year at the LSRU.

 

My '53 Stude was the same. Centrifical force must have somehow factored in the reasoning.

 

There were two or three of these postwar Nash cars in a junkyard near where I grew up. Dad and I always used to admire them and talk about what a nice hot rod the coupes would make. Glad to see someone doing one!

 

I'm ready for a ride in that beauty!!

 

Lookin' at the plugs and cylinder head, it appears that it was runnin' when parked.

 

Nice coupe I had a 50 Statesman , with the same engine you have. It would run 104 in overdrive.

 

Your wheel and dash can be cleaned and restored to look as good as the picture below,,,,,,

 

I love left hand thread studs. I regularly install them on purpose. I have come out several mornings over the years and found all but the left hand nuts laying on the ground from someones attempt to get the wheels in the dark. They usually slash the rubber out of spite, but I have kept the wheels.

Tnomoldw, the color swatches are great. Thanks! We've talked about doing the wheel in white, trim in sunset maroon. Still a ways away from that, but I *think* (without consulting my partner in crime) we'll retain original Nash period colors. Great info.

Morning Hambers. Quick update. We're Almost down to the block now. As you can see from the pictures we have 3 stuck valves. We had to use a block of wood and some gentle (well, not so gentle) taps with a 5lb sledge to loosen them. Now soaking in 4d-40 in the hopes they free up enough to pull them. They are preventing us from removing the cam. otherwise crank, pistons etc are out. Getting close to hot-tanking her.
Timing chain was REALLY sloppy. Can't imagine they were even able to tune the old girl with that much play.. time to look for a new one.
Bearings looked good. A few minor scratches here and there and a little wear on the crank. Nothing too terrible and we're trying to figure out how far we want to go. Remember, this is a budget build. Whatever we can reuse we will. That's all for this morning.

update: Driveline is out. Car is down to a shell more or less now.
Opened up the trans and was pleasantly surprised. Gear cluster looks like new and cycles through just fine. Syncros have minimal to no wear. We're cleaning her up, putting in some new fluid and stuffing her back in. Even the throwout bearing is smooth. One less thing to worry about. Just need a clutch disk..
Engine: Unceremoniously yanked the three stuck valves as the weren't loosening up on their own. Bare block will be off to the hot tank shortly. Time to order some parts to start the rebuild.

 

Loving the progress, kinda looks like the mess in my garage with the torque tube in the way! Just wish I had that much room.

More on this later when we get some time with the wrenches. But, long story short a friend found this '47 Ambassador 4 door in San Antonio and the price was right. Honestly not much crosses with our coupe, but it'll be well worth the cost for all the misc items that we Can use. This car is nearly as complete as ours, sporting the overhead valve 6 cylinder and OD tranny. Great old car..

Progress has been made in the past few weeks, but nothing really picture-worthy.
Interior has been fully stripped. NASTY job with a respirator and exacto removing more rat turds and 67 year old upholstery. The front seat frames look amazing. We'll be upholstering the coilspring areas and painting the frame. No way we're going to hid it behind fabric again.
Steering wheel is off the car for refinishing and much of the trim has been removed. Frustrating work as bolts tend to brake no matter how much lube or time you spend on them. Good thing we've got a parts car! We're slowly getting down to a shell and beginning to think about metalwork.
A few misc things have been cleaned and powdercoated, but lots more to to go. Tranny has been scrubbed pretty well and will be set aside until assembly.
Thats all for now. More pictures to come when I have something worth posting.

Greetings from Wimberley. Great car! Eclectic bunch on Saturday nights out at Cab--as on I35 in Buda - hope to see her out there sometime.

 

Cabelas (parkinglot) has a Sat. gathering? I didn't know that. We'll drive the old girl out there if we ever finish. Think we'll have to take the back roads with our 88hp and 3 on the tree..
Good to meet another local. Wimberley is a beautiful area, wish I could find some employment out there.

Geez, I think its been a few months. Lots of progress has been made, just not much to look at. We're very close to a bare shell now and still lots of tagging and bagging. I've started refinishing a few things here and there. I thought these were really fun so I took a few pics.
We've got horns! They look a little different from where we started. They were disassembled, and powdercoated base/clear. They were originally gloss black from the factory, we added the clear for a little extra 'Pop'. We'll be giving the ai cleaner the same treatment.
Looking forward to actually testing these but we don't have a 6v battery hanging around the shop yet...
