Would this be Starved Rock State Park near I39-I80 Utica, Illinois? Way back when that car was new my girlfriend (wife) and I spent many days with my 1949 Dodge around that park. Maggie your pictures amaze me.

You are either referring to the pitot tube, having it out there kept it in clean air away from any airframe turbulence, or to the camera pack bulge under the fuselage for the Recon model (RF-100).

    Doc.

PS: Interestingly I read that the USAF Thunderbirds Aerobatic Team operated the F-100 from 1956 to 1964 then converted to the F-105 Thunderchief, known as the 'Thud' for the sound of them flying into the ground. They handled like a brick! Funny enough shortly after the team converted back to the F-100 from july 64 to 1968 when they changed over to the F-4E.

From what I understand of the RF-100s very few were made. I wasn't quick enough to pick up on the F-100 Mech in brackets (Hey, 5am at the time:() so didn't mean to feed you the obvious about the pitot tube!!

  9. I'll bet it's one and the same. I stumbled across this photo looking for something else and thought it belonged here.

:D RE:"Glacier Girl".Had the good fortune to live only about 35 miles from the Middlesboro,Ky airport where she was rebuilt.Went there many times to see the progress. Was there for her first flight after restoration.MAN,did that raise some goose bumps, and bring a few tears to many eyes.NOW that was a great day. What a sweet sound those engines produced.
That was about 10 years ago or so,as I still had my 74 F100.
    Good luck.Have fun.Be safe.

There were some pictures of the Commonwealth Aircraft Company's CAC-15 Kangaroo posted not long ago and caused a little furore. As the final design fleetingly resembled the P-51D many assumed it was just a copy.
This could not be further from the truth! The CAC-15 was developed over quite a long time frame. Initially being a radial engine aircraft with semi-elliptical wings like the Spitfire.
The main influence on the design was in fact a captured German Focke Wulf FW-190, a highly capable aircraft that out classed all contemporary Allied fighters.
It was in fact intended to be a replacement to the P-51!

    First concept.

The radial design was followed through as the wing structure/tail and fuselage changed shape through development and testing. The radial chosen was a turbo charged Pratt & Whitney R-2800.

Final design for the radial version.

Unfortunately at the time that the final version was being considered for production the P&W R-2800 became unavailable from the US. There was a mad scramble to find an available engine that had similar performance and was readily available.
This is how the similarity to the P-51 came about. The only engine available was the three-speed supercharged Rolls-Royce Griffon Mk 61, this could be locally produced however for testing one was leased from RR of England.
Below is the final design, a P-51D is included to show the differences between the two aircraft......

Sadly due to the lengthy delay incurred in this last re-design the first prototype did not fly until after the War had ended. That and with the dawning of the 'Jet Age' the CA-15 Kangaroo was deemed 'Surplus to requirement' and never reached production.
The one prototype was sent to ARDU (Aircraft Research & Development Unit) there is saw quite a long life for a prototype only being 'retired' and scrapped in 1950.

IMO some of the greatest music ever came out of Stax.Otis Redding was a "Soul" singer unlike some of todays falsetto singing so called soul singers.
