I have posted this link before, but I think it's worth your time to check it out. I have saved a ton of pictures from this site. George is a HAMBer too.

Not sure what Thames you're referring to?

  3. Every gasser should probably have something from Moon Equipment.

I've read this thread with great interest, I'm 60 and in England, I've always liked the gasser willys but only got around to finally building one recently, I never saw them run originally but have plenty of old mags that I used for reference.
I also read and reread the rules that Larry posted up many times before setting out on my build.
I built mine with a full interior, full lighting etc etc as that's what was in the rules.
I have some modern stuff on my car as I want it to be reliable and quick as its a street car too but it's not visible from outside.
Just wanted to give you guys that were there way back when an idea of why I built mine, I had to build from pics and I'm pretty happy the way it turned out, sure there are things that I would of liked more original but being in England those things are very hard to come by.
Just wanted to give you an idea from another persons point of view.

    Here's mine

Some would take that even farther and say it had to run in the class back in the period NHRA had the Gas classes. But I do agree with your theory that if you build a "gasser styled" car, you should take the time to makes some passes every once in awhile. I've taken both my Austin and Falcon down the strip numerous times, and not to make them qualify as a true "gasser", but just because it's so much fun!

George I understand your passion but we differ on changing or diluting history. I lived drag racing from the mid 60s and am still obsessed with it to the point that it has in a way steered what I made with my life. I have worked hard for what I have and somehow ended up with a polebarn with a number of cars that all will have some drag race theme. I am a nut on this stuff.

I also love history. I have the remains of an old Indy car from the teens and started researching years ago and pretty soon I had a file cabinet full of stuff on the era from 1915-1919 (the AAA-300 cubic inch limit). Disgusted with some of the history, I started to write stuff down to ease my temporary insanity. I wrote a three part article on the history of Mercer in racing and although it is not perfect I suppose, I have been given pretty good kudos for my effort. I also was upset with the early history of Cadillac and wrote a piece that was published on that as well. Both of those articles will last longer than I. Maybe you should channel some of your passion and write setting history straight. I have a publication asking me to do another piece but to do it write takes a bit of time. The upside though is it does give you a sense of accomplishment. The HAMB is a great place to set history straight as well and what you did with the Comet shows what really was-although be prepared for other historians to challenge you (which can add to the fun as well).

Since my grandfather was a large car collector with a restoration shop dating back to the 40s, I spent many hours there from the time I could walk. I was 15 when a couple of brothers hired me to do the bodywork and paint on their new drag car. I spent a few years in the garage getting cars ready and in the pits (we did not call them gassers-drag cars was probably used more). I had the chance to choose big buck classic cars and high dollar brass cars and chose drag cars. People have questioned my sanity as if I had the same passion for the others I would be retired with a fat wallet right now. But I have great memories from times past with drag racing and would not trade them for anything.

I feel more secure with the history of drag racing moreso than the 300 inch era. There are many knowledgeable people on drag racing and the real history has already been written. It is a closed chapter. We cannot open it back up and dilute it or change it-it is a done deal. We have the benefit of the pictures and rule books etc. What is being done today is not all that bad. It is a new history and some take license I suppose with what a “gasser” should look like but look what the resurgence has done. They have run old gassers at Indy as exhibition. I too cringe when I look at some of these cars. I can’t even bring myself to put an MSD box on any of my cars. Will never happen. I still have points in a couple cars. If they go bad I replace them, although I may put a Mallory (we did back in the old days-so I can do it without my hands shaking at the thought). Guys today are trying to recreate one of the best eras of drag racing and I feel better about that than seeing a bunch of foreign front drive cars. When I look at these cars I try to use a little diplomacy and bite my tongue when I see the wrong stance and obvious components that were never there in the day. But in reality they are only having fun and really not fooling you or others that have real knowledge.

When I attended the Meltdown with the red car in my avatar it was great seeing vintage drag cars. I have been trying to relive the 67 Nationals for the last 40 some years. Events like the Meltdown (and others) are the best thing to happen to the sport. I attended Milan last weekend to watch the “gassers’ run-great stuff. Look at the number of “gasser” organizations springing up. This is the best thing that has happened to the sport in 40 some years. The old gasser days are history and they are not being changed. A new history is taking place and I for one am going to enjoy it. If someone tells me their car just stepped out of a time warp I may take issue with them but may give them a decent grade for the effort. My two cents.

Langy:For a guy who's a few thousand miles away, you sure have good aim.Nice job on that Willys!Really good looking car.I was never a fan of the whitewall slicks, but they do kinda seem to work with the white paint, don't they?
What's your drivetrain setup like?Shoot us some more info!Have you run that thing at Santa Pod yet...?

You raise some very good points. No matter how hard people try to change facts, nobody will ever be able to tell you that Germany won WW II,right..?

I had no idea that you were published.Thats a pretty big deal.Congratulations on your passion and hard work paying off in that department.
Being the hardcore GM guy,I bet you really got some chuckles out of Ford's run at the 36 Indy race!:)
(For those of you that aren't into this stuff,Ford built the most cutting edge, state of the art cars ever built for the new season, and early in the race the cars were murdering the rest of the field.....until the grease boiled out of the steering boxes that were located too close to the hot exhaust manifold and the steering locked, rendering them useless...)

That's stated as well as I've ever heard or read it Jim! Sitting and lamenting the end of the era for years, and then seeing the revival of those type cars, and events surrounding them has been a real joy to me!
I also agree that the more knowledgeable people like yourself take the time and effort to document the old days, the less likely it will be for future generations to get it wrong, or forget it. I run into guys who are half my age at events, and they surprise me with how much time they've spent to learn about this style of car. Occasionally I even run into kids that are too young to even drive, and know enough that I'd guess they learned from their fathers, or do a lot of research.
I'd love to see more knowledgeable folks write down what they know, even publish what they have, so the drag racing and car history buffs have even more references to look at. Even with some minor errors, the available resources are few, (but great) and not everyone has a collection of old car magazines to reference. I think it would be a great service for the knowledgeable car guys to document what they have, and make it available to the next generation, instead of keeping it to themselves and wait for someone to make a mistake so they can correct them.

Steve has a really great build thread here! You should take a look at what he's done, as it's mind blowing!

Some kids do get taught. I was at a local cruise night probably ten years ago with my 65 buick skylark and two little kids probably 7-8 years old were looking it over and one said to the other that it must run at least 13's because his helmet is in the back seat. I knew right then that kid has this affliction we call hot rodding.

  17. Well, it's power comes from a real Ford, SOHCamer, 2 fours. The ignition is MSD. This may be the biggest liberty taken under the hood. The trans is a Jerico 4 speed, (not really sure when they showed up on the sine), V gate Hurst shifter, Ford 9" out back on ladder bars and leaf springs. Pie crust on Americans rear and you see the fronts. The car does have front disc.

All the windows are safety glass with regulators in the front doors. The roll bar would never pass strict tech inspection today although it is build period correct. The front buckets are period, new belts.

IMO the biggest difference is that this car is built to a show level of finish. Every tig weld is a work of art. Every bead roll of the aluminum interior panels is spot on. Every rivet placed just so. The body and paint work are far superior to what you would have found back in the day.
Well let's see - Ford Cammer ~ although it was designed and released for NASCAR in 1964, Ford did not get any of them into the hands of Drag Racers until 1964 when they gave some out to the S/FX Mustang guys and then Top Fuel racers Connie Kalitta, sneaky Pete, and Lou Baney (for the Prudhomme driven car.) They also went to some of the Funny Car guys like Chrisman, Fast Eddie, and Kenz and Leslie. In 1966 they made them available to the public as an over the counter part, but at $2350.00 (which is about $12,900 in today's dollars) I don't think too many Gas Class guys bought one.
The Jerico trans didn't come out until about 1980.
the V-Gate didn't come out until later either - the original Hurst Ram Rod vertical shifter was the one that guys used in the 60's.
So you've got a lot of later year stuff, with early tires, non cut fenders (which would have been cut to run enough tire then), and a mile high stance that was over by the time those parts came into use.
And that scoop - that might be the most offensive part :D[/QUOTE]

Just like the Comet you put up!
DIME A DOZEN? Are you freakin kidding? Read what i said above - they weren't available to the pubic until '66 and they were mega bucks!
Well for starters this car wasn't built until 1971, when the Gas Classes were starting to die. And as we all know many cars ran at tracks all over the place that weren't legal. Just because it said A/Gas on the side, and in an article that was done when it was first built (but not really raced yet from what I understand) doesn't mean it ever ran Legally. I can't find where that car ever won an NHRA A/Gas meet - I think it had to run outlaw, just like the Porck and Howell car.

Your site should be an education for all those that really care about this and not making up their own rules or history.

a lot guys dont even realize there were gassers like this. This morning when I woke up, I found myself thinking about a similar local car, the Kremer Bros '57 T-bird. Early/Mid seventies, square tube, coil-overs, ect, usually ran D/A with a dual dominator 351 cleveland, was very fast. Wonder where that car is now? I was sitting with Jack Mezzomo and Howie Stevens at the GVMSA deal on Saturday, wish I would have thought of it then, they would probably know. Good example of what most gassers looked like in the tunnel ram era.

I think most Gassers built in the 70's looked more like Prostockers than anything else.

Unfortunately we still have a lot of them to teach! I was in my driveway a few weeks ago tuning the 327 in my Austin, when a young guy in his late 20's walked up and started talking to me, along with his friend. He was excited about the car, and seemed to really like it, but as I soon found out he didn't have any idea what it was.
He asked me if it was made for offroad racing, or the sand drags? I was shocked to say the least, but before I could respond his friend (who obviously was more of a gearhead) laid into him, and explained what a gasser style car was, and after a short time his friend walked away. The 2nd guy stayed for probably 15 minutes asking great questions, that indicated he did understand these cars.
I wish the 1st guy had not been embarrassed by his friend and left, as it would have been a better learning experience if he'd stuck around.

^^^^^^^^ Fireball Shores car is the old Skippers Critter after Shores took it east and chopped it.

You can still see the Rat Motor on the hoodscoop. I wonder what that scoop would bring today?

Well, kinda. Harry Miller built them, it was a total rush job at Fords behest, they didnt have anything like sufficient development time, and Harry was not happy about the whole deal. About the only time Harry really fell on his ass, and a major embarrassment for him. He took the job because, as usual, he was broke. Hell of a race car builder, lousy businessman.

Pretty much, from the outside at least. Most pro-stockers were round tube, so wound up racing as Altereds when they retired from Pro-Stock.

Scott, work got in the way of a quick answer. Although that era is a bit past the 300 inch era I am very familiar with the story. Ford was my first subject I ever researched.

Just for the record though as much as I like some of the GM stuff, I may not be as hardcore as others I know. I own a 61 Starliner and wish I had my 64 Plymouth back-Jim

    Jim:
That's a pretty impressive stable you've got there.
And I appreciate your position;although I'm a pretty hardcore Ford guy,I also have a soft spot for a couple of Bowties and the occasional Mopar around here.
My wife almost lost it when I tried to find the owner of an o/t Cortez Silver 69 Z/28 on the weekend to make an offer when it was parked outside the restaurant where we were having breakfast.:)
