Thank you for noting that! I was laughing to myself at the very fact that I now have two wheels on the car worth more than the car is in total! I kinda want to get the Americans back on just for that reason too... The way my luck has been runnin' lately... Well, lets just say I have a bad reaction every time I see a red P.T. Cruiser.:D

Bright orange. Chip I'm liking you more all the time. We used to call it competition orange. A friend Glen painted his hemi. powered 30 A roadster Mac truck orange and showed it at Oakland in the mid '60s. My second favorite era is the early to mid '60s.

Glen's roadster picture is from Rodders Journal #39 page 54. Oakland 65.

Notice the Chrome rims in back. Made by Mor Drop Axle in Oakland. I was there when Glen ordered them. The owner said we can put two wide side Buick rims together with your Ford centers or put in a 4" spacer in your reversed Ford rims. Glen in his bigger is better mentality said I want both. When we picked them up they were beautiful and the widest, deepest I had ever seen.

Mor Drop is still there in the same building, under new ownership.

I do too, but it avenges Hot Rodders every where. A very BAD reaction.;):D

  4. Here's a little better picture of the shop wall, for anyone that likes that sort of thing.

You just hit the magic nail on the head Gary! Competition Orange. My favorite color ever since at about age ten when I sprayed an AMT Fiat altered kit that color over the white plastic body with no primer. Talk about a color that pops!!

Ok, I've been following this from the outset. And am also a 'bucket junkie. This indeed feels like shop night at Chip's, and I, just like I would be live in person, pretty much just shut up and listen. But I must thank you all for chiming in. In particular the 4 or 5 "regulars", for the insight, and for making me realize that there is more than one 40-something guy around that spent his childhood consuming 60-70's era rod magazines. Love it. And another vote for orange. And the 4-71, 'natch.

    brad2v,

Thanks for following man! And it goes for everybody, if your in Phoenix, give me a yell. My phone number is at the bottom of every post I make. I can't always hang out, but while your here in town I'm sure we'll hit some time to hang out and I'll show ya around a bit.

Well, we took the first ride out tonight! Judy got home early from work and we heading out to a cruise night that I kinda helped found about 15 years ago. I hadn't been out to it in a long time. 'Bout a ten mile trip each way, and our little 'Bucket didn't skip a beat comin' or goin'! I've got some tuning issues to deal with, but then again, who with a hot rod doesn't, right? Hung out with H.A.M.B.ers Gasser Steve, and John Evans, plus members of my club The Red Devils and a bunch of friends. We stopped and took a glamor shot of Miss Judy in the car parked across the street from the house before we took off... Here are the results.

    Damn...... looking good.

I sure dig those Halibrands. Forget putting them on the T, I would just hang them up in my den and gaze at them hours on end.

I did for the first week I had them! Judy was out of town in Hong Kong, so the all four Halibrands came in the house, tire and all and were arrayed about the front room of our house while I just sat and stared for hours... I can't tell you guys how long I have wanted "no holes", probably safe to say since before I could grow a beard. There is just something about Halibrands on a hardwood floor...

Damn, that shifter is almost as tall as she is! Theres a simple, self-serving reason why I never suggested Naples Orange with Gold Pearl. As I have mentioned to Chip a few times, I have three separate parts piles around here, one of which is supposed to become a 289 ford dual AFB T bucket, and I have already kinda tabbed it for Naples Orange with Gold pearl, and the 16x10 ET Vintage V's I mentioned earlier. I'd just hate to see Chip paint his T-bucket Naples Orange with Gold pearl first...:p:rolleyes:
Pearl Yellow like the none I posted last night WOULD be pretty damned cool.

I liked that wild Himsl stuff, especially the blue flake shortened T tub he painted for Reynard Moody. I REALLY liked that car.

  12. Been checking on this for a while and those pics ^^^ show me its gone from a bucket to a T Roadster, like it lots. JW :)

Yup, but she was sitting on our jackets and stuff too to help support her pose! At least she wasn't doing the "V" fingers thing that all Asians do when you snap their picture... I did laugh at her a bit last night because suddenly at the cruise night she became "information central" for the car with people asking her questions left and right. I did hear her tell someone, "he want orange... it'll be yellow"! Little does she know the paint has already been purchased!

Stick by the "COMPETITION ORANGE". She'll get over it. It might mean the silent treatment for a while but that's not all bad either.

Seriously, I mentioned it before and I think you should make this a goal. Driving through Gate one Fathers day at LARS 2014 with me. All your roadster needs is the shiny orange paint some upholstery and you clean up some mechanicals and it's there. My group has found a great out of the way hotel a few miles from the Fairgrounds. If you get serious I'll P.M. you the details. We can line up my friends '40s style flathead powered 29 A, my '50s T and your '60s T. Guaranteeing a crowd around us all weekend. Maybe some Magazine shots.

Anyway I'm liking your roadster more with each change you make. Honestly I wasn't really sure it could be done (make it "right") after seeing the first pictures you posted, but now it's almost there.

And yes early '60s fiberglass is "traditional". I didn't think those words would ever come out of my mouth. Technically they haven't yet. Evan on the DeBenedictus roadster the bed is fiberglass.

The T is looking sweet Chip. When I first saw it next to the pics of the car with Americans on it, I thought they looked too big. Looking at it now I think I like the look a lot.

    Gary,

Since you made that statement one day last week it's been in my head rattlin' around, and I think it's doable. I really want to go for it and even mentioned it to Judy last night in the form of "Ya think you could ride in this all the way to L.A."? I got a nod yes! She's never been, and what an introduction to the world of L.A.R.S. this would be for a first timer!

If Orange is your pleasure, may I humbly suggest Hugger Orange.

That's a mid to late sixties color from GM.

My old man has a Camaro that color, and it is awesome in person.

Ya, hugger is cool. But AMC Big Bad Orange is just a bit more ORANGE than Hugger. Besides, it's already purchased and the paint job promised!

  22. A small car like this can get away with a strong color, even benefits from it. On a bigger car there are "tricks" to work with. In one of my albums is my old '39 Chev coupe, hugger orange with 100ppm of white to take just a little of the edge off.

 GARY! I never knew you thought otherwise. It's usually the Neo Traditionalist's who think like that.:D

Yup. That was one of his better jobs. Not too crazy and a good color combination.

When you consider that car was probably painted in '66 (the photo I attached was taken at the '67 Oakland Roadster show) it was really cutting edge. A lot of guys copied it later on, But Himsl really did it first.

Love Himsl's roadsters. Farther than I'd want to take one, but they were tasteful AND over the top. Hard to do...

I chit-chatted with Art at the last GNRS, I've met him a coupla times and he's one of the nicest, most genuine hot rod dudes I've ever met.

Yeah, that trumps all other considerations, don't it?

Pretty much any orange will look killer on this car.

Bigger question is, How is Ms Judy gonna take it? ;)

That shift handle would drive me nuts! Don't you have to hold it, while driving? It's like motorcycles with "ape hangers". Cool, until you try to ride that way for a while.

It's really not too bad. And, being one of those annoying Lokar deals with detents on every gear it really does stay put... So far. It's funny cause with it way up by the windshield like that in park, it's still pretty far forward in drive and I just don't think about it. It can stay for a bit...

When you do fix it, do a straight chrome stick about 16" long, with a black 3/4" ball, maybe guys will see the single pedal and think its a hydro...:p
