My friend acquired a auto. trans of unknown origin. The bell housing looks to be a BOP, that unbolts from the trans. The front shaft is a very short splined shaft. The feature that has us stumped is that it has 3 shift levers on its side. It appears to be a GM trans. Any help is appreciated. Hud
It's astonishing how many people will post things similar to this and expect an answer. I worked in auto parts, at the dealer level, and ran into this sort of thing daily. "Uhhhhh, I don't know what it's called, but I need this thing that goes on my engine, sort of close to the end. I think it's made out of metal. How much is it?"
It is a AUTOMATIC. It is not a Manual or OD trans. It is a automatic with cooler lines . It has 3 selector levers on it side, not one selector lever. Hud
Not that i ever looked at one.... but how about one of those goofy Mopar half breeds? Half A/T but with a Clutch, or was it half standard with a freaking convertor. Clutch flight, gyromatic, or WTH drive?
How many concentric splined shafts in the front? And is the case iron or aluminum? Sheet metal cover on the left side?
thats automatic trans with a clutch Ive never seen one up close, but werent the very first fluid drive trans missions still manual based and shifted but no clutch ?
They're still out there... AND THEY WALK AMONG US! At our shop this customer is referred to as the "tube-thing guy". "Yeah... ummm, I gotta pick-up and I need that tube-thing that's got one end connected to something on the motor and the other end I can't see where it goes."
Now I'm interested to see what the hell it is, damn thread should have been 2-3 posts max if there were pics. Begrudginly subscribed.
Chrysler Fluid Drive has 2 shift levers on the left and 3 electric gizmos on the right. Looks like a cast iron 3 speed out of a dump truck with a humongous bellhousing.
One shaft , short. Alum. case and no sheet metal. Does not have a gov. access on the side like most GM trans. Has no vacum modulator. Has one line coming out of the top. Don't know if vent or vacum tube. I have been over on Google but haven't had any luck there. What happened to the good Search feature that this page use to have? Hud
That's a tough one. I go back to most of the old iron boxes, and the only thing I can think of with one spline shaft is the old Hydra-Matic because it had a fluid coupling and not a torque converter. Those needed 2 spline shafts, one was a mount for the stator. I left the independent shops when the aluminum Powerglide was just coming in and went to work for Ford Engineering.
Thanks guys. He bought a project car a couple months ago and it was in the trunk. We were not familiar with it. I don't think he will use it. Thanks again. Hud
