Projects 36-taildragger.....Made in Sweden

Discussion in 'Traditional Customs' started by Kenneth31coupe, Mar 17, 2013.

  1. Continued with the passengerside a-pillar today and had no expectations at all after what the other side looked like just go on and get it fixed.

Cut out the bad part and was really surpriced of what I found. Under the first layer the inner post was really nice. Only some surface rust so I just brushed it off and painted it with zink primer

Made a new piece to fill the cut out part and here it´s done.Wish it allways would have been this easy

  2. Looks great Kenneth. You got a whole lot more done than I did last week.

  3. Thanks Kipp.Maybe more than what you have done lately but not much of progress any way. Today I mounted the doors in to see how they fitted after all work I´ve done on the pillars. Not that bad after all, driver side needs a little adjusting to fit the body line and reveals but passenger side takes a lot more work. Will adjust them both so they fit properly with the reveal and body line before I start cutting in them for rust repair.Think it´s easier to do that now instead of after the repair.

    yes--easier to line now---then patch/file and tweak

  5. Nice to see the doors back on Kenneth. Once the repairs are done then the fun can begin.

  6. Nothing much happens in the garage these days.Thousands of other things to do but managed to get some time left over this weekend.Got the doors aligned but couldn´t start repairing them since I had run out of sheet metal.

Started on this instead. It´s the hole for the trunk and it got som rotten parts there too. Braked a piece of sheet metal and shrinked it a little to get the right radius and then popped some holes in it for spot welding
    [IMG]

The catwalk was not perfect when I started and it requiered some heatshrinking and hammer n dolly after welding maybe would have been easier to replace it but I like to keep as much Henry metal as possible so if it´s not rotten I try to straiten it.

After a couple of hours of shrinking and hammering I think it´s good enough.

  10. Thanks Nate. Don´t know if I was lucky but when all screws were tightend the doors fit allmost perfect in front.Only had to warm and bend the lower hinge on driversides door slightly to make it parallell whith the cowl.In back there where not more than about 1/8" to 3/16" the door needed to rise for alignment so I did it simple and just lifted the door by hand to make it fit. Everything moves smothly and no bending in the hinges.Feared this would be a nightmare at first:)

    Thanks Trev. Much appreciated

Great work, I need a Pullmax!!

  13. Catwalk came out nice Kenneth. Getting closer.

  14. Thanks

  15. Have started on the doors.Have to replace both outer and inner bottom parts. Before I start cut them appart I will make some new panels.Cut out a sheet and shrinked it a little along upper and lower edges to make it curve. Then I´d run it in the pullmax with doming dies for a smoth radius.

The bottom edge was trimed with a bodyfile to get a smooth edge for the bead.

To make the bead I had to first make some dieholders and some dies for the pullmax. Made the dieholders so that I can bolt the dies in it. In that way I can make other dies and just switch around.

Here is driver door done only have to brake the edges to fold around the door inner piece but will wait to do tha untill its time to install it.Have to make the inner part first.

    It's a thing.

    I've got it too. ;)

  21. Sorry! Wasn´t my intention to make you feel like this

Got the door bottoms made yesterday. Started with a sheet that I braked like an L
    [IMG]

A trip in the stretcher to make it curve
    [IMG]

Then a trip in the pullmax
    [IMG]

Made a tool like this to make the dimples
    [IMG]

Laid the panel over that die and then I have this one to make the dimple.Hit it with a "plastic" hammer and there´s a dimple
    [IMG]

Then I simply bend the flange with a wrench.I think it´s the easiest way with such small flanges.

    Here´s the driver side done.

  27. Time to repair the doors.Started with the outer panel and tacked it in place keeping the old bottom as reference to keep the shape on the door.

When the outer panel was fitting and tacked I cut out the bottom and tacked in the new one.

When those panels where properly fitted I cut out the whole inner panel and parted the door in two.Now I have acces to the inside of the outer skin so I can hammer n dolly after welding
    [IMG]

Also makes access of the inside of the hinges and it sure was necessary since the lower hinge had losen from the stiffening bracket.Probably thats why I had to heatbend that for the door to fit.Now I can make some proper stiffening here. Not sure yet how to do it but I will figuere out something
