This is Shannon's other build that has been keeping him from working on the Hudson: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=568646
So I should have pix of the new heart today. 331 caddy. edmunds dual quad intake. chrome all over. Truly a site to behold.
SWEET!! Will we see it at the Gunnison show? I just KNOW you can hammer everything out before then...
Doin both. Well, that and six other cars actually. That would be ideal. But first I need to get the time to get the glass and headliner into my damn 54 ford first so I can get it sold.
you gonna build it, or run it? the guy that worked at A1 (Joe) when I started there used to talk about his Zephyr coupe that he put a brand new '56 crate motor into in '56. The Hirohata merc, and countless others......... awesome choice!
Thank you. I just want to get to it right now. But guess not. To much other shit in my way right now.
I finally got the chance to get a bit done to the old girl. After moving, selling my ford, and my shop getting real busy, I have not had the time. But I have to have a car by summer so I had better get started! Here is some progress. This build will be slower than the 54 mainline was, but still progress none the less.
If ANYONE knows of a front clip, grille, and rear fenders for this car, PLEASE let me know!! I will be in need very soon!
I saw a 4dr Hudson that bodystyle one day when I was a kid and it was kool enough to inspire me to build my first ride, a '50 Desoto when I was 17. I was the koolest kid in the high school parking lot, and know what? I had 4 doors.
I cant wait to see this build, especially if youre emulating those photoshops done with the carson top, dark red, wide whites, skirts... mmm
Oh boy! Finally get to watch this one! I'm really digging that Caddy mill in there too, looks like it was made for it.
I agree! When I was putting it in it made me cuss the previous builder even more. The original floor was hacked up quite badly and that was just for a 350. THe 331 fits very well and none of the floors ever should have been modded.
Does anyone have pix of how the hood tilts forward? More specifically the parts that do it? I am missing so much I have to know what to build. Never done a tilt hood before. Anyone?
You asked about building a Carson top. Someplace there are illustrated directions on the web but briefly, you build a frame out of steel channel (window frames) conduit tubing and 1 or 2" wide steel strap, 1/16 or 1/8 thick. Toss a bed sheet over the framework and push the car outside where you can eyeball it from every angle and various distances. Don't just look at it inside the shop. If it doesn't swing cut off the bad parts and redo it. When the frame is perfected, cover it with chicken wire, then cotton padding, then cloth. With the cloth on you can poke the padding around with long needles to get the contours smooth. Finally cover the whole thing with Haartz cloth (convertible top material) or vinyl top material. Your best shot is to build the frame then have it covered by a guy who builds boat tops. He will know how to fit and sew the top and make it right. On the Buick engine swap. You are lucky the Hudson has an open drive line, no torque tube required. If you check out the local junk yards you will get a fifties V8 sooner or later. They seem to turn up around here about 1 a month but you never know what you will get, right now the local cheap junk yard has a 39 LaSalle hearse, 64 Olds 394 and 3 or 4 flathead Plymouths. A couple months ago they got 2 57 Cads and a 60 Buick, it's all according.
I like the bed sheet idea. That'll make it much easier. I now have a 9 inch from a 59 ranchero that will be getting used for the rear on this thing. And she is getting a 331 caddy mill now instead. I do appreciate it!
So yesterday I went to the loc al yard and pulled some rockers, exhaust manifolds, waterpump pulleys, and dizzy. Today I bought tailights, motormounts, axle pads and some various other odds and ends. Getting excited!
so. I ran into an issue. Well, besides not getting the parts I need yet, turns out the 331 I had in it, is a race built 331! Domed pistons, huge valves, adjustable pushrods...etc... So now I am looking for another motor! I am not sure I want to place this race motor in that car. Just not the style of cruiser I am looking for. Any ideas?
How ya'll doing? I'm new to the site but I was reading about this hudson and the build of it. I just bought a 1942 hudson coupe project car and know that I am going to need some parts. I know that there are not many cars or places reproducing parts for these cars but if anyone has any information on where I can get parts for my daughters and my project I would greatly appriciate it. Thanks. P.S. I think the car looks better now then when you got it.
