Exactly, makes it easy with the steering box up front, fords tend to crack the chassis with p/s and imo there stronger and there a tad longer in w/base.

Mine will be on a heavy chassis too, a one ton dually to be exact. I already have a 1/2 ton truck but I need something more heavy duty to "work".
Mine will have a curved 18' deck to haul cars, a gooseneck built into the deck for 5th wheel trailers and a Class III hitch at the rear for other trailers.

  6. I stayed away from pick-up frames, went a little heavier. 3"x 9"x 5/16 rails from an International fire truck chassis. I fabricated all of my own suspension pieces for a 3 axle air ride set-up. (including a air lift on the pusher axle) I liked the heavier straight rails because measuring/modifying/welding is easier than on pick-up stuff. Also my engine is very heavy, (1600 lbs) so by cutting some off the front of the rails and some of the rear, I used the original engine location/mounts
I also used the IH steering gear, as it lent itself to my needs!

Anybody seen a long wb single rear wheel one like this? they seem to be sort of common in Canada which does a US resident no good-almost impossible to import.
The GMC's made by UnionCity were value vans and the grummans were kurbmasters and often confused -called chevies.

Search your local Craigslist for "P30". If you don't find one local, expand to other areas. There are TONS of them out there! At least there are here in the southwest.

Yep. Looks like 125" wb. I picked up a 84 chevy p20 srw with detroit 6.2. Paid 500 for it and drove it home.
51 ford going on it eventually.

There was a couple of those p20 30's at andersons? Salvage in Springville utah last year but i think they cleaned up the place and closed shop.? The city basically ran them out of town!

I dont recall how many were srw but ay least 2 were. I woul think once you get a longer wheelbase and or p30 they would all most surely be a dually?

Got any pics? The back said it's a Larry Woods design, released in 2013 but I thought Larry retired several years ago.

Yep on the P20/P30 thing. My bad.

  12. Released in 2013, he could have done the design any number of years ago.
Ironic that it is a Chevy, and his real one is a Ford.

Duh, just saw your first post. Yeah, looks like someone inspiration from someone else here, but who knows. Having met Larry and having had a personal tour I know that these things are in the works for YEARS with countless clay and wooden models, each made of multiple parts and in multiple scales. Strange that they're both Chevy COEs with similar beds and specifically designed for a TIG outfit. Good catch. And thanks for sharing because I'd never seen that thread before!

  14. As a kid in California, I remember sitting in this Rocket! Inside, it had 8 or 10 seats, setup 2x2 like a small airliner. Up front was the "cockpit" where the driver had all kinds of flashing lights, levers and*****ons. It was cool to take the pretend trip to space.

I have been doing that for the last two weeks--im not looking for a P30, those are easy to find.
Im looking for a SRW 3/4 ton, which is correctly called a p15 as far as GMC,

im not looking for a dually chevy stepvan---as you said they are all over the place.

Hey buddy,i'm really enjoying your rear engine mini truck build.Have you considered splicing the guards,so they look and operate like a 48 chev or similar car, that way there's no hinge probs and more access, just a thought anyway!Nice work on the booster btw.

  21. I'd give serious thought to gull wing doors on that one.

Not all 1-tons are dually. Many came as a single. We have a few at work and only one is a dually. Search and look at the pictures before you pass it off.

Well I figured it was time for me to stop lurking and finally join the HAMB :)

I have always wanted to get a military vehicle, and just recently a fantastic opportunity came up for me to get a 1941 Army signal corps K-18 radio truck. They only made 400 of these, so there cant be to many left. She had sat in the same spot for over 30 years, I just got her moved to her new home, and I already have so many ideas dreamed up for what I want to do to it !

The outside is going to stay stock with a military repaint, but the drivetrain will all being changed out to make her fun to drive anywhere. The interior will be done up camper style so we can have a place to sleep wherever we go.

    The HAMB is a great site, look forward to talking to you all !<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/19997518@N02/10604283355/" ****le="20131026_175400 by wlsilva, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2850/10604283355_7dc18a6aea.jpg" width="281" height="500" alt="20131026_175400"></a><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/19997518@N02/10604300614/" ****le="P1150022 by wlsilva, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5530/10604300614_4d43ca6264.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="P1150022"></a><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/19997518@N02/10604295105/" ****le="P1150018 by wlsilva, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2887/10604295105_1ac17bd3e0.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="P1150018"></a>

  26. Thats a really neat old rig. Check out steelsolders.com, they are a military vehicle group. Might give you a little history or know where to find some of the rare parts.
