    Hi,

I have a stock 55 chevy 210 and am thinking of uprating the steering to get rid of the play and generally improve the feel. Think is I don't want power steering, what set up do people reccomend?

    Thanks,

    Andrew

check and replace all worn parts & replace idler arm bushings with a bearing kit . The steering effort will be about twice as easy as standard steering but not as easy as power

Hi, Thanks, I have a poormans steering kit was looking to install and have done all the track rod ends, etc along with the springs etc. in the power bar.

  6. You can still use the idiot steering and use your box. Cut the shaft install a coupler of your choice. I think someone did a post here sometime back.

Thanks, yes as you say you cut the shaft and use a coupling. Most seem to go with the 605 box but as mentioned i don't want power steering. Thanks for all the comments!

I have stock rebuilt steering, and a stock column in my 55, and it works fine. 92,000 miles on it so far. I have a floor shift so I modified the column just enough to remove the shifter stuff.

It does take some patience and effort to get it all working properly....but that's what traditional hot rodding is all about....making old stuff work, rather than buying something.

We saved a mild Kustom 57 Hardtop from terminal storage that had a GM collapsible column tilt. It had a clamp connector welded to the input shaft that fit column and a split plastic cone/cover. Here is a pic. I thought it was a later model box, but don't know for sure. I don't do enough of these cars to know the parts.
This car drove great, but was a pain for some people, who just could not get that you don't turn til you roll. I was about to install a 500 power box from CPP when we sold the car, so I suggest checking with them or at least their site.

I installed an Ididit. tilt column on my long term 57 nomad project.
    I hate it !
    It works well....but it's about 6" too long !!
Steering wheel is right in my face...
I recently read somewhere that they are building a more compact unit ????
If this is true, I will have a slightly used unit for sale cheap.

  14. 57 is a problem with the way the cluster fits up to the column. The 55-6 work well with a 67-72 Chevy pick up column. Some modifications required.
