Good day! I bought a pair of backingplates on eBay that was listed as -39 Lincoln but i know they are either -41 or 42-48. That is my backingplates in the pics with ford 42-48 spindles, kingpins, drums & hubs. All stock bolts together without modify and the offset is about 13/16" on the backingplates. Any ideas? They are 42-48 Lincoln's with the deep offset. There is a thread on here that lists the parts you need. Do a search. The 41's are the only ones that have the shallow offset or any of the rear plates.
Pewsplace: Are you sure? The 42-48 ford spindle bolts right up... The stamping at 2'o clock says "for safety, made in USA, bendix brakes" The part number on the backingplates are: #44970 Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Walle, Can I borrow your thread on some lincoln ID's I am helping a widow with her late husbands stuff, and some of it is Linc. He had a 39-40? Zephyr and a 42 Continental, both conv coupes I found a 2 speed rear with brakes, and a front axle without brakes, Two- V12 motors, one has fresh chrome plated heads that say Zephyr. The other V12 is wrapped in plastic, so I will get pics Thursday. any ID help or value is helpful. Thanks
When I used 47 Lincoln brakes on my 37 Ford, the deep offset required spacers. I used self adjusters too.

All of the self adjusting parts that are in the re-pop lincoln brakes will work in yours backing plates.
Ok, i have read somewhere that 60-70s f350 self-adjust parts can fit? For the repro brakes im just finding the self-energizing parts... I have now solved my mystery backing plate case... They appered to be 42-48 lincoln that been machined and then welded together to the same offset as 39-48 ford plates, very nicely done though. I do not think this is repro, the repros who is available today does not look like this, they look more similar to the REAR lincoln plates. The water shields are just tack welded so they can be removed easely from the originals. They are also available repros. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
I've never fondled a repro, but do the repros have "BENDIX" stamped into them? I'd almost bet NOT! DD
Agree to that, dont think the lincoln original part number is stamped on the repros either... My question is: Will -41 Lincoln flat drums fit my application?
OK Walle, you made me get off my opinionated butt. Went out to the shed looking for the 44970 backing plates and found it to be the medium deep, 1942-1948 Lincoln fronts. What that means is that the medium offset druma are the only drums that fit. Stopped buying them years ago when I decided that the abundant rear brakes were good enough for me and that also could use the abundant Ford drums. Pretty sure that the '39 to 48 front hubs are alike and can be freshened up with the current reproduction Ford drums to make good replacements for the '39-'40 deep offset backing plates. Yes i know the drums cant be interchange between the years. But my medium backing plates have been modified/machined so they have the same offset as 39-48 ford backing plates.
Well! You might have said that earlier, rather than leading us down a path of partial information. Modified? You mean the backing plate has a section removed to reduce the offset? Also, the ring has been removed? Really the long way around to get what would be a reproduced backing plate, sold as a '39, but more closely resembles the '41. If all the surprises are revealed, sounds like something made from the '42 style plates before the reproductions became available more than a decade ago, otherwise why would the ring be removed? I have already said that earlier in the thread!! Yes, not a very hard and long way to go if you have a lathe. Why is this puzzling? I would guess it was a person who wanted genuin lincoln instead of repro and had 42-48 backing plates laying around and a lathe in his shop... The goal is to have as little repro parts in your build as possible? Sure mine is anyway. Does anybody know what offset/backspacing the -41 lincoln plates have? Is it the same as 39-48 ford or is it more flat?
Doesn't really make any difference. As long as they are NOW the same as 48 Fords they should bolt up to some Ford drums, which is what you really want to do, right? Compare them to some Ford backing plates and see if the offset's the same. If it is, you're golden.
It does make a difference, im about to buy a pair of flat -41 lincoln drums if they fit the offset, im heading for a narrow front end so -41 lincoln drums would do it much better. I already own some ford drums and they fit, and already compared them to my -46 ford backing plates and they have the same offset. Thanks.
