Hi Folks. ran across an old chopped 46 Merc custom, anybody recognize it from days past?

apparantly the story is that it was a 50's build, abandoned and then poorly (and I mean poorly) channelled over a 70's era Oldsmobile frame/drivetrain. Top is supposed to be a real Carson, and it does look like their construction.

    any help would be appreciated!

    Thanks

That would be a great one to save...Did you buy it? Or just go to look at it?

Hi Bob, I'm putting together a "group buy". the seller is a good guy that got a little overwhelmed with projects. probably make it happen next weekend.

I'd second that it looks like a good one to save. The shape of the top is right on the money from where I sit.
Lots of work but worth it.

The windshield chop/stainless looks like it was taken from a burnt kustom. Then transplanted onto a shitty old car. I dig it, make it happen.! Only saying this because of the lack of other bodywork/i.e. headlites handles and trim are all (H.F.)
Still a kickass find. Oh by the way is it on a drop-top frame?

that thing has been up on craigslist for quite awhile.. are you going to add it to your stash out in the desert? the last time i checked it out the price was pretty reasonable..

    Neat find...

I checked my files... but I don't have anything on it.

It looks to me like it could have been built in the last part of the 40's.. when the car was still pretty new. It has all the characteristics of an 40's built custom. Chopped top and molded in rear fenders seam the be the only or at least most obvious custom body work done to it. Appleton spots where part of the package... but the head and taillights where not modified, and the grille looks also to be stock, or at least the surround it mostly stock.

I would say an early example of a custom car. Possibly brought as a stocker to the Carson Top Shop and they handled the chopped windshield as well.... (well that was then done by Jarrett Metal Works, which was next door, and the Carson shop supervised it.)

Hope you guys can buy it and rebuilt it as an mid-late 40's styled custom... GREAT!!!

After 4 years I finally was able to buy it!

Gonna pull off the body this week and see what I have to work with. Should be fun!

Cool on getting it and bumping this, i missed it last time :)

Take some pics of the basic top construction, and the pieces above the door windows if you can. I'm sure others will want to see how it was fabbed.

Shame about the frame hack but the top does have nice lines to it, hope it can be saved and maybe some history found on it as well.

got the body off of the frame this morning. it looks much better now! frame is a 68-9 olds with a 455.

It's a very fixable car, it's actually really solid with good front floors and solid tin. here's some more pictures.

just got the body stripped, what a solid car! definitely 3 phases of construction: 1st was chopped windshield, carson top and shaved stainless, hood and trunk. all that was done very well in lead and is holding up nicely.

second phase was brazing in the rear fenders, not done as well. Third was the horrible frame change.

Body will be very straight forward restoration.

    Hey doc,

That's a killer old kustom you've got there!

How are you planning on getting rid of the rust on the body panels, blast or dip? Any of the topical rust treatments sold today will spell big trouble for a real paint job up the road! I don't think I'd ever dip another vehicle in my life, but if you deside that's the route, Strip Clean in Santa Ana, still does a good job. Finding someone who can blast sheetmetal today, without doing more harm than good, is a job in its self!;)

Will that fit on a '46-'48 Ford frame if you adjust the wheelbase?

Any chance you'll top coat it in lacquer?:D

Also, did you sell the flower car (M&M)? you had awhyle back?

I hope you'll restore it faithfully back to late 40s styling!

    That car is BITCHIN!

Thanks for closeup pics of the way the roof and door glass frames were done. I've never seen an old custom roof frame without the cloth.
