I am subframeing my 28 chevy with a 56 c-10 front 1/2. The car presently has an independent front in it with a cross steer gm box. With the c-10 front Ive got the choice of converting it to a cross steer and useing my present box or finding an american (no foriegn car stuff) made side steer ps box. Any advise on what box to look for?
That's a tough one....a friend did a couple 31 chevy cars with the I beam axle, and used a stock manual truck box from the 40s-50s, and it works fine. With narrow tires, and a big steering wheel, and 5 turns lock to lock, you don't need power steering in such a light car.
Did a cross steer with the stock axle and a vega box on my 28 chevy. Car is so light it steers great. Oh. Also have the big stock steering wheel. j
Look at Ford Ranger/Bronco/F series P/S boxes. They rotate opposite of GM and are suitable for mounting with the sector shaft horizontal as in the stock Chev C10 orientation. Allows side steer with power assist in stock steering box location. You would have to build a suitable pitman arm. A good friend, who does custom fabrications/swaps/adaptions, has done several with excellent results. There is a conversion, from CPP IIRC, but they place the P/S steering box forward of the axle and from I have heard about them, not a very appealing method.
The c-10 frame isnt on the car yet,Im still sourceing parts. The c-10 sub frame/axel/springs will make it just like putting ps on a 56 c-10.
well when they put PS on 55-59 chevy trucks they use 79-86 toyota 4x4 boxes. has to be off a straight axle truck or it will be different box.
