George was always proud of the fact his car was so winning without ever going to a blown hemi as most his competition did. When he ran the Caddy, there were lots of others running them too. When he changed to a SBC he was making a decision to compete with a much smaller c.i. engine, and he still won a lot. The SOHC Ford was a risky move at the time, as it was really an unproven platform, but I think with backing from Ford, and their engineers, it was a great choice.

And I bet that big ol' Chevy tries to pop the windshield right outta that little Bird every time it finds traction, too!:)
I know my o/t 66 Ford 'M-word' comes stomping outta the hole pretty hard with just a hot street 289 or 302 and some enthusiastic use of the throttle and clutch pedals...!:)D
I can just imagine what a hot BBC would be like in a light little ride like that!:)

Unfortunately it does try (successfully!) to break stuff occasionally. I've got the trans out presently to swap in a Lakewood bell, and have the trans repaired too. Going to make some upgrades this winter to handle the slicks I'm switching to, so when it gets better traction I don't break something else in the drivetrain.

I forgot to mention in my earlier post....that scoop just looks so insane...must have been pretty intimidating to stage next to that car.

If you haven't mocked up the engine, trans and headers with that scatter shield outside the car,I would take a couple hours and do it just to confirm clearances and give you lots of room to grind and/or tweak parts.
I can't speak for the BBC units, but on my SBF application I had to gring about 1/4" deep, roughly 3-1/2" long on the driver's side flange of the scatter shield for header and clutch linkage clearance that was a HUGE pain in the ass after all the parts were in that tiny little engine compartment.
I think my wife actually has a purse bigger than those early '60's falcon/comet/mustang engine compartments....lol

Headers aren't an issue with my fenderwell headers, but since it's all in the car presently, I will have to do everything under the car. When I installed the engine and did all the fab work, I left tons of clearance in the trans tunnel, so no clearance issues there. I'll only have to check the mechanical clutch linkage to ensure it all goes back as it was. Wont know on that until I get the trans and bellhousing back, as they are together at the shop for fitting work. Pretty sure it will all clear, as nothing sticks out father than the edge of the bellhousing bolts to each side.
I am using a very early Lakewood universal bell that has the Chevy-BOP dual pattern, plus Tri 5 bellhousing mount holes, and can additionally accept a hydraulic slave cylinder on the bracket. To top it all off it also is an early 2 piece that allows the bottom half to unbolt for clutch changes. That will make it much easier to check bellhousing alignment, as I can set up my dial indicator, and turn the flywheel with my tool to see if all is within tolerances.

Two piece would be so much better for clutch adjustments at the track,or on a fresh combo....I'm jealous!

Yeah, it was a super lucky CL find! I wanted one when I put the car together, but nothing in my cheapskate budget then. Found this one last week on CL for $60, and got there before anybody else!

    ...nothing pretty but it's mine.
I made the scoop a 2 piece to afford enough room for my engine hoist when I take the engine out. That part is now complete I just need to take more pics. Plan on working on it tomorrow so maybe I can post a few more.

Believe it or not Swade I could still move it back an 1 1/2" and still be legal. I was amazed at just how much leeway 10% allows.

    Thanks Steve!....or should I say Thanks Steve! ! hehe....yeah I'm an idiot.

Down & dirty is best. The ones that look like they'd beat you up in an alley and take your lunch money. THATS a gasser must have. I like it, Whats goin on with that big chevy? other than that injection. Do you have a thread for it?

No, this is actually the first pics of it I have ever posted. I only did so because Panneton was curious and he helped clear my head on this thread a couple of times so I obliged him. Up until now I have tried pretty to hard to keep a lid on it...not sure why really.

The engine is a big unknown because I traded for it but so far everything has checked out. 454 with heavily worked heads. It's going to get blown apart and gone over by a real pro. Hopefully it's not totally spent.

    .

I'm pretty sure it's going to pull the wheels every run John, but I hope to try and keep them somewhat sane with wheelie bars. That's the plan anyway.

That's the one! I'm going to have to really get my tail in gear but I might be able to run toward the end of the season. Finding time to work on it is my biggest hurdle.

Thank you! I thought about starting a thread ,but worried about feeling rushed to post updates and such. I guess if it got to be a drag I could always stop.

I know what you mean. I think take pictures and don't post all at once. I think most of us understand about time to build and other commitments. ;)
