It is 1957 again. You just graduated from High School and your rich uncle will buy you any new car you want . You can special order the car optioned as you wish. What would you choose? and which options? I would choose a 57 Ford with the factory 300 HP supercharged engine. In the day I would have chosen a Skyliner, retractable HT or Sunliner convert, but now I would get a bare bones Custom Tudor with 300 HP Supercharged option and dealer installed export cam, Overdrive, Tinted glass, padded dash and oversized tires. I guess I would order it black and white. I would order radio and heater delete too. What would you choose? A Chrysler 300C convert? Bel Air FI Convert or Black Widow 150? Plymouth Fury Dodge D501 Pontiac Bonneville Convert Desoto Adventurer Packard Caribbean Corvette Thunderbird Studebaker Golden Hawk Buick Century Mercury Turnpike Cruiser OR?
A 1957 Mercedes 300SL gullwing or Ferrari Testa Rossa ...then I would be a millionaire today. Seriously, more in line with reality a 57 Chevy Bel Air Convertible or maybe a Caddy Eldorado Biarritz , a kid in a Caddy like that ...yeah
First choice would be the cheapest 57 Ford 2 door sedan with the highest HP 312 and overdrive, would have a heater though since it gets cold in Ohio. Next would be a 57 Savoy with the biggest motor and overdrive and a heater.
I would go for a Ford base model with a 312 and a 4 speed. Beings I was 1, most likely something from Gerber.
I would have bought a new car back then but not now,I was pricing new trucks the other week and got sticker shock.
I would have also gone for the supercharged 57 Fairlane 500. But all black 2 door hardtop, 3 on the tree since they didn't offer any 4 speeds back then. I would probably choose something different today, knowing how much some of the others have increased in value.
Black Widow options checked off to the 1st Sedan Delivery. Or A F.I. Nomad that has every thing available from the factory installed. Then the dealership add ons. And in either case, the rear cargo filled w/goodies NOS.
Well,as I was only 12 at the time,I sorta liked the Studebaker cars. So,more than likely I would have picked a V8 with 3 speed OD in the Starlite Coupe body style. Good luck.Have fun.Be safe. Leo
Well if it was 57 again I would not have let my uncle trade in his 53 vette that he was going to give to me, for a 58 biscayne station wagon that he gave to his sister..... only got 500 bucks for it in the trade....... what a waste.
I'll take a '57 Belair 2dr ht, black, red interior, fuelie, 4.11 posi, special dealer installed 4-spd for $188 more. Set of day 2 chrome reverse wheels and I'm all set.
X2 on the Chevy FI sedan delivery. Heater/radio delete, Posi rear, Hydromatic. Black. Poverty caps on blackwalls
Did not know a FI 57 Chevy sedan delivery was available and I think I will change mine to a F code 57 base Ranchero or Courier if they were available.
57 Mercury Commutor wagon 2 door wagon with a Bill Stroppe prepared M335 dual quad engine.3 speed overdrive, stripped no options. Just like whats going together in my garage now. Oldmics
57 Chevy Bel-Air convertible with 283-270 horse with 3-on-the-tree, overdrive and top in off with a 4.11 posi.
I'd settle for a left over '56. Golden Hawk, with a dealer installed dual-quad 374, T-85 o/d & 4.10 Twin Traction. Or '56 or '57 Commander 2 dr sedan equipped the same. Hell, that is what I'd still like today
Kind of a loaded question: what would I buy knowing what I know today or what would I have bought if I could have even remotely afforded a new car knowing what I knew then? Assuming the latter, Oldsmobile Super 88 coupe J2 equipped with the special competition package.
Got some info on that? 58' or 59' was the first year of the FE and I don't think a 352 could be had with 2x4v or a 4spd..Tri power was used until the 427/425hp..I think..I too would have choosen the blown Ford...
If I'd really just graduated from high school, there would be only one answer at that age... 57 Corvette. Fuelie.
