    Among several guesses, yours was absolutely the closest. In Germany they used mostly coal to generate carbon monoxide gas to run the engine. In Scandinavia (Finland, Sweden, Norway) we used generally wood but the system was similar. These monoxide generators were used during the WWII and for several years after.

    Thanks to everyone who has chimed in on these vehicles ! I've been trying to figure out exactly how the engines ever ran on wood or coal . I'm told that electricity could be generated using such methods too. scrubba
