1952 MB W194, the carbureted pre-production, race version of the fuel-injected 300SL Gullwing.

 

I was hoping not. They were so effective in WWII against much slower fighters over Europe... I would have thought a quad 50 or 20mm radar guided "stinger" in the tail would have simpler and been more effective, ala B47/52.

You are correct, they tore it down sometime in the last 70s. I recall it also, it wasn't far from our cruising grounds.
