Growing up in the 70s, I had one of those tyco race tracks, played with it tons of times till the cars broke and never did anything with it again. Eventually it got tossed and forgotten about.I remember seeing my dad watch me and saying he had some old slot cars somewhere, but that was pretty much the extent of that, till last night. Found 2 sets in the attic, i took the one home thinking it was cool, but didnt realize it was 17 1/2 feet long! My kid is 7 and she dying to play it so i got to looking around and i was surprised that these things are still around and being used..theres a commercial track about 5 mins away! Anyway thought it would be cool to see some other pictures of the slot cars and tracks everyone else has. Did the search function and seen a few slot car topics but not many pictures, so thought I'd give it a try..
Here's some pics of my Eldon 1/24 Top Eliminator Drag set.. lets see what you all have

I remember getting a four car figure 8 race track for Christmas,I was about 10 years old,my dad, granddad and both my uncles played with it most of the day..I barley played with it Christmas Day,I was miffed to say the least.

As I think back on it I can visualize all four of them laying or sitting on the floor laughing and accusing each other of cheating..great memories. HRP

I've always been into HO slot cars, more racing, less space !
I sold off my collection about ten years ago, no job, but it kept me in food and lodging. LOL!! Wish I had all that stuff now.

man those are some killer cars.. ive been looking for a set online today but didnt happen to see any tracks with more then just two lanes. Do they still make 4 lane tracks? I figured id buy my kid a set, and see how she does before i let her try the dragstrip out.

I remember a place on Woodward Avenue north of Detroit called, "The Groove". It was a huge building with most scales of slot car tracks. Something for everyone. I hung out there a lot, but the bigger boy's always had the fastest cars.

Actually on Main in Royal Oak, just north of the Woodward wye. Bud 'The KAT' Anderson from AMT used to hang there, too.

A buddy of mine and I used to ride our bikes carrying our slot car tackle boxes about 4 miles to race there.

We once built a magnesium dragster with a Pittman 704 rewound to 3 volts and ran it (once) on 36V. So fast that it went right through the lights and the safety barrier. I still have the one remaining forward frame rail.

I remember the Groove being on Main St. just north of 10 Mile. I had a friend who lived across Main from it. His older brother raced and won there quite often. Were there two Grooves, or did it change locations? At one time, there was a place on Woodward around 14 Mile called Tiny Tims. I am sure is was way after the Groove closed.

Sorry about that. Tiny Tim's is the name I meant. The Groove was closer to my house and I got them mixed up. I'm 61 now, so that may have something to do with my memory failing.DUH! Thanks for straightening me out, guys.

Damn, the only one I remember is Action speedway. If I remember right ,when it closed the 1/24 th track was left outside in the rain and destroyed.

  22. I used to drag race 1/24 hard body cars, started out with HO Tyco "Night Glow' set.
This is the last drag car I built, haven't raced in years there are no tracks around anymore.

I had some super wompies in the early '80's. I think 1/24 scale?

I went to a track in Waitara (one still exists there - northern suburbs of Sydney) as a kid. Coin operated power, 6 to 8 lanes wide, one flat track with a loop & bridge, the other was a banked track. I remember having a hot motor, and the controller almost melting in my hands. record back then was about 10.2 seconds, these days it's 3 seconds!!!
    Great fun, great memories

    cheers Mudgy

Doc that is killer! can you give any detail how you built it or somemore pics? My buddy and i were talking today about trying to set up my track and see about either finding soke old 1/24 scales cars or attempting to build our own..and info would be great!

  27. Chainsaw,
Do you remember a track in far north Dallas at Northwest Hwy. and Ferndale?
Don't know how long it lasted, I think it was still there in 69 when I got drafted.
Not sure though. Spent a lot of time and money there.

Been racing on and off...since the 60's.
Currently have about a 50ft wood track stuffed into one bedroom. Works well with either 1/32 or 1/24 cars.

I've got both plastic and steel framed 1/32 cars. I've got two 1/32 cars that would cost over $300 to build. I've also got a coupla cars that cost about $45...and a lot of them inbetween those costs.

    No usable pictures...sorry.

The old Aurora vibrator cars got me started..

    Mike

P.s. - For a coupla years in the mid 60's, if I wasn't at school or at home, I was about a mile away (as the proverbial crow flys) at Fast Wheels Raceway in Covina, Ca.

No I don't. The only track I went to in Dallas was Action speedway on Davis but this was later on in the 70's when tracks were closing. Used to go to a track in FT.Worth off I30, cant remember the street. It turned into a pool hall when slots were dying but they still kept the blue king track.
