You are right on Indy Big John and the other man in the photo appears to be (although some of his face is now shown) Dale Swanson of Harlan, Iowa. Swanson later built a pair of '39 Ford coupes for Lund #55 and Johnny Beauchamp #5 and they ran at the Playland Park track in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Swanson later built the '59 Ford Thunderbird that Beauchamp drove in the first Daytona 500 and finished second to Lee Petty.

 

A very young M.M.. Note the deformed extra toe on her left foot which she had corrected ASAP after the start of her fame.

 

According popular legends, the "honour" corresponds to Napoleon army but back in 1737 Frederic L. Norden made some sphinx's sketches, published in 1755, showing her noseless!
The nose was destroye using two big cissels and according the egipcian historian al-Maqrizi (s. XV), Muhammad Sa'imal-Dahr, a suffist Muslin, was the responsible, to prevent the popular adoration.

I contacted a friend, Dave Newell for the inside scoop on these cars, and the picture. Dave is a Corvair and GM Historian. Here is his reply:

Yep those are real. They were made by GM Suisse in their shops for the international exhibition in Lucerne. The kiddy driver's roadway layout (meant to teach traffic laws & road manners to kids attending the exhibition) was co-sponored by Nestle chocolate who provided the dumb looking hats. The pedal cars were later used in a traveling GM driver ed exhibit that set up all over Switzerland. The Swiss Corvair club has one of the cars as does a friend of mine in the Netherlands.

BTW the photo is the inside cover of an issue of GM Overseas Operations' GM World.

 

Got a little more information today. They made 20 of them 6 red 8 white and 6 blue. But they are not pedal cars! Look behind the seat there appears to be motor. They are either gas powered or electric.

 

The car in that post ( http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=9391282&postcount=84232 ) was built from a 1961 Tempest. They shortened the body to make it a two seater, among other modifications. Unlike most show cars, it reportedly made it out of GM and is in a museum somewhere today.

San Fernando Valley, 1930's. This is Girard (later renamed Woodland Hills). Looking north on Topanga Cyn Bl. The big street going left to right is Ventura Bl.





Ventura Bl years later- appears they are preparing to build Hwy 101 aka the Ventura Freeway. Now, I assume, called "The 101".

 

As the pic says, 1937 from the top of Topanga. According to the caption those two white buildings in the distance were (or would become) Canoga Park High School (RIP Chester Bramblett, a fine teacher).
