Technical Model A front lower shock mounts?

I'm not really a fan of the lower shock mounts that bolt onto the bottom of the perch pins that so many people use. I am building a period correct AV8 Tudor using all old parts and those shock mounts just don't do it for me.

The Bishop/Tardel book shows a bung welded to the perch pin boss on the axle, but I'm not a huge fan of that look either. The weld would have to be ground down REALLY smooth for to me happy with it and that's a tough spot to do that. I HAVE seen some lower shock mounts where the axle was drilled between the perch pin boss and the king pin. I like that look but haven't seen a lot of pics of that setup, so if anybody has pics and technical how-to on that, it would be appreciated.

I am planning on using the F1 type of upper shock mount and have already modified mine as the Tardel book outlines.

Any issues from people that have used the drilled axle method regarding strength of the axle now that there's a hole in it right between the perch pin boss and the king pin?

What about how the shock would function with the lower mount out that far on the axle?

…OR…other locations for drilling a shock mount hole or methods for lower shock mounts?

…What about friction shocks??? Don't those mount to the perch pins on original Model A's? How might those work?

There's a triangle shackle that mounts the shock too.
CE has them in their catalogue

 

I don't think yer gonna hafta worry about drilling holes in that part of the axle...it's the beefiest part.

 

Ive also seen alot of axles with brackets welded to them. I remember reading somewhere friction shocks aren't as effective as tube shocks.

 

I made a bung like the Tardel book. I chamfered the edge that goes against the axle and had someone TIG it for me. I agree a MIG weld would look bad and be hard to smooth out. The TIG is small and neat. By the time you get a shock stud in there and a shock in front of it you won't even be able to see that area anyway. I'll see if I have a pic of mine and post it.

 

I did mine just a bit different. Yes they got painted Black and the bolt heads after the photo. I did not weld the spacer to the axle. Works just fine.

That's a nice clean approach and mounts the shock in its most effective position.

Thats the style I used- may change it later. I give you credit for paying attention to the small details

I don't see anything but if they are as nice as the hinges you make I'm sure they are good.

 

Thanks for the compliment F-6, but they aren't on my website. They were just something I made in the past cuz I didn't see any for sale anywhere, then made a bunch of em that I was going to offer for sale but never got around to it. This thread just popped up then I remembered I have a bunch of them layin around. The quality is nice for just threaded bungs though. I do have pics somewhere around here....
