I saw this picture posted, I thought I'd relay a little history. This is the Diamonds Restaurant, about 40 miles west of St. Louis, Mo. on Rt.66. At one time billed as the world's largest restaurant. The building still stands but I think it is currently empty. Just a couple years ago it was still being used as a truck stop.

I miss the old style diners. Some much character and what a great use for old rail cars too. Drive thru fast food joints don't compare and you don't have the same kind of human contact.

In So. CA there are fewer and fewer of real coffee shops.

 

"Ladies Dining Room"?? And upstairs at that...

 

Bob Hope was the real deal. I was never oversees for Christmas to see one of his shows live, but we watched them every year on TV.

 

I think it's a shame that most of the magnificently appointed rail cars had to be scrapped. I would love to have one or maybe two. I guess the cost of transporting them from the rails to some distant location was too costly and impractical back then. These days people would find a way, you betcha.

 

I know there aren't too many options, but I liked the fact that if you went into one of those rail car diners, you knew what the booth and counter arrangement was before entering. Counter with stools on one side, booths on the other. Very comforting.

I've been trying to post one county a week from the Kansas Historical Societies' Kansas Memory's webpage.

 

But, I've gotten distracted by some Tulsa pictures I've found this week. Cherry Street was not much when I was in college there, but now it is a nice business area.

 

I usually try to get some form of transportation involved in my posts. This is sometime before or during WWII.
