Projects crminal coupe, an attempt at a 31 A build

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by crminal, Aug 13, 2013.

  1. It's the shot that makes it look like that. Actually fits comfortably, but right there.
    I'll save your suggestion for a non-mechanical application ;~)

  2. So getting back to how the steering box went in, I decided to use the same location as the stock box. Hoping to use a stock shaft in a tube type column. We'll see.
    Plugged the stock hole
    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1380256143.476534.jpg
    Welded it in
    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1380256175.789083.jpg
Ground and drilled a new hole for the sector housing and plugged the stock mounting bolts
    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1380256280.064908.jpg
Once welded up, made 3 new holes for the mounting flange

Thanks to NealinCa for machining the sector housing and providing this mounting flange which I will tack to the housing when correctly positioned.

Great work criminal! keep it up!

  5. Thanks for the good vibes, Neal and RPM.

Pulled the 292 engine and got it on a stand to strip it down. Looks to be in pretty good condition (bored 30 over). Pulled the heads to take to Tim for a dose of his "magic touch". They are 113 heads and should be a good start. Not planning anything major, just head work, oiling mods, cam, stock large bore 4 bbl and Holley 600. We'll see where I end up ;~)

Got some Lincoln front brakes from Derek at Boling Bros when I was at the CHHR. Also got my 40's steel rear wheels widened to 7" by Wheelkid.
2 good guys to do biz with.

  13. Appreciated guys!

So, speaking of good plans:eek:, the steering box, oil filter adapter, manifold all in the same piece of real estate just isn't going to work.

Moving the steering box up on top of the frame and back a bit makes all the difference. It needs to be there. Looking through one of Hitchikers old threads, I found a solution by member "Paulsec" using a VW bus steering mount (hey its from a late 50's early 60's so its vintage ;), right?

I located the mount and they are inexpensive. Maybe I can get NealinCa to turn my sector shaft down a bit more.....:eek::eek:

    Thoughts are welcome

If you want to send the box back, along with the VW bus mount, I can re-machine it. I can also credit you back on the flanges. It would probably just cost you the shipping.

  18. Got a bit more done, actually for me a small victory.
Got the holes all filled and did some frame rail clean up.

Then after hours of fitting this and adjusting that, think I got it all to fit by using the steering box mount I mentioned previously.
Here is how it all looks...

    Steering, exhaust clearance looks good...

  20. Looks like it will work!

  21. Yeah, I think I can put this one to rest. Also pretty happy about the idea of having a McMaster built engine in my future! Gotta get this baby ready ;~)

The VW bus bracket looks like it worked out well. That is a tight fit, but looks great

  29. Been watching your videos of you tearing up the countryside in your beautiful Tudor. Especially the sound that engine makes tearing on by. Then this.......

    Tim, I'm stoked!

    Thanks ;~)
