Vintage shots from days gone by!

My first commercial flight in 1958 was from SF to Den on a super Connie. Suits, dress's and only one class FIRST free drinks, cigarettes and meals on real cloth, silver forks and knifes. A great way to start 50 years of flying before I retired

 

I have been so very lucky when I was in the Army, I was a member of the "Red Beret's Australian Army Parachute Display Team", we did almost every big Air Show held in Australia. As such we got to associate with all of the air craft crews, deals were made for tandem parachute jumps in turn for rides in many of the war birds. HARS Super Connie was a staple and we got to ride in her many times. I don't care, it could take twice the time from A to B but I would be happy to do it in a Connie!

My first ever airplane ride was in a Connie. Pittsburgh to Los Angeles, 1959. I was 6 years old. It left an impression on my young brain that hasn't left and probably never will. THAT was flying. Nothing like today.

For some reason I see a vague resemblance to Angelina Jolie....though I wonder if Angie's legs are this good!

 

Always wondered whether those cars listed to one side after a few years.

Holy cow! This flew over our house in East Hartford when I was a kid of 12 or so.
Pratt and Whitney flew many tests of radial engines. This one was different, flying
on the engine in the nose with the other four stopped. Lots of discussion in the
schoolyard. The B17 in post 86683 is probably the same aircraft I saw.

 

Probably in Ada, Oklahoma.

 

Today, Casselton, North Dakota is in the news because of a fiery train derailment just outside of town. So far, there have been no reports of casualties, but this is Castleton many years ago.

 

It appears that the woman in the dark coat and hat in the foreground of this Babe Ruth photo is Kate Smith.

 

My Dad had a couple of thousand hours in the Air Force version (EC121) during the 70's. They flew the airborne early warning and control mission now handled by the AWACS airplane. The AWACS program was delayed by congress over funding, and most people don't realize the Air Force flew the Connie until 1977. His unit flew them both from Florida and Iceland playing cold war footsie with the Russions. Dad alternated between locations.

 

WOW! I seriously did not realise the USAF flew the EC121 until '77, an even greater and impressive service record for the Connie! Boatmark, be very proud of your dad a true 'cold war' warrior, right on the cutting edge of any conflict had it developed into a war.

Elegance, especially the fur coat. Sadly most of those once-special stoles, coats, capes etc. are now either relics that have been hidden away in a closet trunk or worse yet, tossed out. Seems that once upon a time they were quite the fashion statement and the envy of many ladies who wished for one. As with the cars of those periods, it's another indication that times certainly have changed!

 

I found these pictures of the Dayton Ohio area before Rt 35 was made into a highway and alot of the area was torn down,I was too young to remember and seems like another world. This garage is long gone and was on Wayne ave just north of where Keowee St now intersects and I think the picture was taken around 58.

 

Here are a couple pics of the area I work at now that the highway took out,the Lucky auto seat cover building is where the highway is now and the other picture is taken a little further up the street. This is S Patterson Blvd looking south

 

Love the old ad for Barney Oldfield tires.

Old ads were very straight forward and simplistic in there layout and design.
