Projects KIWI MADE 1927 T Lakes modified - Journey to the end of the road!

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by woodbox, Mar 31, 2012.

  1. Did you receive the cert tag and I believed the certifier had to rivet it too the car and just not hand it to the person, But I could be wrong and it has been awhile since I had my T certified. Does Rod Hyland live up your way now ?

  2. Sorry Russ, it was way too nice to be working on anything that didn't involve a chilled bottle!

  5. We have plenty of spectacular coastal roads around here and I can't wait to get into some touring, and would like nothing more than to record it for you guys. I have a mate that is into making movies.......we need to talk!

  6. Heading into town in a few minutes to the upholsterer for the cover and maybe a couple of carpets.
Cert plate should be here today......fingers crossed everyone!

My wifes hip op went well yesterday, and I will be heading back to hosp tomorrow for her. Damn everything has to happen this week! This town seems to shut down for 3 weeks over summer, so there is always a rush on to get everything done and waiting for others to do jobs drives me potty!

Pictures of the cover today sometime or maybe in the morning tomorrow......stay tuned folks!

  7. My cert plate is in transit!!!!!!!!
The cover will be finished this afternoon!

  12. I rang today about my fender exemption, it is in the post. So should be there when we get home from the hospital. I will finally be able to drive without worrying about being stopped by Johnny Law!
The trouble is that even when you do everything legal, you still have to explain to the officer that it is legal to drive a fenderless car.

  16. Thanks for that Daddio.
We are home again now, settling back in without the kids for a day. They will be back tonight.
My fender exemption card and log book (It is a requirement to get it signed at a sanctioned event twice per year) were in the mail, so I am all legal now.
I hope to get into the shop today to attach the tags and cert plate to the car. I won't push my luck though, if the patient doesn't feel too good, it can wait.

  17. A friend of mine, yesterday, gave me an hour meter/tacho off one of his mowers. Not much bigger than a matchboook. It works from a pulse from one plug lead and when running indicates RPM and when engine is off indicates hours. The unit had a flat battery so he was throwing it out as it was a sealed unit.
I carefully chopped the case open and found that it used a hearing aid type Lithium penny cell. I removed the solid state resin (it was like caulking) and removed the cell. The cell was 3v so I searched around and found a plastic holder for 2 AA penlight cells. Holding these onto the terminals I found that it worked! So out with the soldering iron and Voi La! It lives.
I whipped the hood off and connected the pulse line to on HT lead. Ran the engine and it was working........sort of. The unit was reading twice what I thought was reasonable.
I went for a run and halved what it was telling me and this is what I learned.

    At 50kmh (30mph) in low gear 2000rpm
    At 100kmh (60mph) in low gear 4000rpm

    At 50kmh (30mph) in top gear 1200rpm
    At 100kmh (60mph) in top gear 2500rpm

This has confirmed to me that the ratio in the Q/C rear end is going to be pretty much spot on for the road trip I am planning for February.
That little 2 speed trans is so forgiving, you can pull it down into low at 80kph and give it a boot full without any sort of complaint or harshness. Pull away gently from a stop in drive and it will select top after about 3 car lengths!

So there you go a temporary tacho for free!

  18. 1388028341242.jpg There it is! Ugly as sin, but its just temporary . I am not one to spend all day looking at a tacho anyway.

  19. I have still been having a few issues with the rear suspension bottoming out on bumps, especially with two on board. So tonight I shortened a set of shackles from 125mm to 75mm. These were the originals that I replaced with some others that I made at 90mm. A quick bead blast and some fresh paint, so they will be ready to put on the car by the morning.
I hope this solves the problem. They only take about an hour to swap out once they are made.

  20. Short shackles done and fitted. Hopefully this will sort the bottoming out issue!
Now onto the other work for the day. Some time sorting through all the parts stored in the Coupe de jure! Wish me luck!

  22. I found some nice black synthetic carpet in the workshop yesterday. So for my quiet job for the morning (family all sleeping in on a Saturday!) I cut a couple of pieces for the car. Dropped them in, they look great and cover the cert plate nicely!
Now I can get onto the noisy jobs on the other project!

  23. I went for a quick run today with my daughter in to my folks place, we had to pick up my action camera! Woohoo stay tuned for some in/on car footage.
It was a chance to try out the shortened spring hangers, so I didn't back off for any bumps and we didn't bottom out at all, even after we stopped to pick up some grog for tonight! Real roadster weather today, we should have been out enjoying it, but I have been busy on the coupe and making good progress.

  24. So the beer got a good shake up on the ride home.:D:D

    Enjoy it mate.

    Clive.

  25. Not in the slightest Clive! Smooth as silk mate!

  26. Day two at work tomorrow, taking the car all the way instead of taking the company bus!
    Should be fun!

  27. This morning on the way to work. An absolute cracker of a morning for a 50km drive to work!

  28. Great morning for a ride Woodbox . And very responsible that your drivers seat shot was taken in the driveway and not traveling down the southern motorway in traffic.... :)

  29. Gee really! Who does that?

The only time I passed anyone on the way, on a passing lane......and along comes Johnny Law out of the sun, in the other direction!!!!! So I was doing the mirror peek......as we all do!
