"In 1939, at the urging of Jack Frye, president of TWA, Hughes quietly purchased a majority share of TWA stock for nearly US$7 million and took control of the airline. Upon assuming ownership, Hughes was prohibited by federal law from building his own aircraft. Seeking an aircraft that would perform better than TWA's fleet of Boeing 307 Stratoliners, Hughes and Frye approached Boeing's competitor, Lockheed. Hughes had a good relationship with Lockheed since they had built the aircraft he used in his record flight around the world in 1938. Lockheed agreed to Hughes and Frye's request that the new aircraft be built in secrecy. The result was the revolutionary Constellation and TWA purchased the first 40 of the new airliners off the production line."

The Connie was regarded as his baby and he very likely played a big role in its' design. Unofficially of course.

 

Another great vintage shot of a 1956 Pontiac Starchief JR by Silvestri Art Studios in Chicago. These were electric powered and available to the dealers to use in promotions.

Flew in one of those from Denver to Salt Lake City to Boise and back in 1961. Return trip was a night flight. Rode last row and got to watch the exhaust pipes glow red in the darkness. Along with fishing the Little Salmon River, one of my best memories of being with my dad.

This is a really interesting picture. First considering when the shot was taken it is somewhat unique that there wasn't a Hudson in the mix. Being a Studebaker nut naturally I am attracted to the 1951 at the top of the picture. This car (#23) was usually piloted by Frank (The Rebel) Mundy. The car was owned by Perry Smith. Frank and this car had two victories one at Columbia, SC and the other at Mobil, AL. The victory at Columbia was the first for both Mundy and Studebaker on the NASCAR Grand National Circuit.
