I'd love to know the story on this one, I can think of a hundred "funny" captions but the look on Grandma's face tells me it's not a "funny" situation....

Bell P-59 Airacomet, the first US built jet to go into service. It was so bad that the contract was cancelled before half of the initial number of aircraft were built. Out classed by most prop driven aircraft the US were building at the same time they never saw combat. This prompted P&W to get licence from Rolls-Royce to licence build the RR Nene, this was known as the P&W J42. The Nene was also copied by Migoyan-Gurevich and powered the Mig 15.
(The Poms did give the Russians some 20 Nene power plants to copy on 'goodwill'...........dickheads!)

Convair's F 102 ejection seat test rig. With the development of supersonic fighter aircraft there came the issue of exiting them at speed. This was made increasingly difficult as speeds increased as the shock on the pilot could cause severe injury and even death. Convair's solution in the 102 was to have the ejector seat itself rotate backward on exit so the chair itself protected the pilot. In the second pic you can see the seat rotating, this was evidently a good feasible idea as it was used in a number of aircraft.
