Really cool picture thread and brings back many wonderful memories from the good old days of drag racing.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Looking for any information on this 63 Fury Max Wedge...Sold new at Munroe Zeder Plymouth in Miami Fl...White with a tan interior, Low Compression 426, manual 3 speed trans...It appears to be the only White Fury with a tan interior built...Only 16, 3 speed transmission 11-1 compression Max Wedge Furys were built...

Not a real Super Stock car....originally just a 63 Dodge Polara 500 w/ 413 4bbl and a torqueflite...Now has a built 440/4 speed, 4 wheel discs. Had a Super Stock hood to put on it but never got around to it before I sold it. My original plans were to paint some livery on it as though it was campaigned in 63 as a race car and "age" the paint to match the rest of the patina on the original blue paint job. Very fast very fun car to drive, but the fact that it was my only car and the fact that it didnt have any safety features other than a heavy steel body meant putting my newborn son it was a no-go...so I sold it.

Tom Grove's "Melrose Missile V" and Hayden Proffitt both qualified for honors from Champion Spark Plugs

60 pages of Max Wedge Mopars and not one single photo of the "Worlds Fastest Stocker" ? We need to rectify that!

Well, that's kind of a misnomer because the NHRA STOCK classes that Max Wedge Mopars legally run in have now been superseded by the new AAA/SA, AA/SA/, and BB/SA classes. The new blown Mustangs in those classes are running in the mid 8 second zone and no legal Max Wedge car will run those kind of ETs. If the rumors of an impending BLOWN Hemi Challenger coming out for 2014 are true, then my guess is that the Mustangs will be blown into the weeds, if you'll pardon the pun. If a blown Mustang with a 331" motor can run mid 8s, I'm guessing that a blown 6.4 liter Hemi Challenger might hit low 8s in legal stock trim and very possibly be the first legal stocker into the 7s. Of course, then we'll have to start a new thread for that, lol.

Thanks for posting all the great photo's.

Always great to take a trip down memory lane again and remember all the greats cars from that era.

    Thanks Jimbo

Agreed, times have changed. But that 63 Dodge A/SA and the 63 Convertible that Dan used to race B/SA set both ends of the record maybe 50 times or so. That's pretty impressive in anyone's book. At the time it was the quickest and fastest stocker on the planet. And I don't think Dan gets the credit he deserves for keeping the Big Block Chrysler completive. He was not a high dollar operation. He was working his magic with worn out parts, long before Mopar Performance came out with new heads and blocks that make it easy these days.

Is he still active? I recall seeing pictures of the convertible in "National Dragster". What happened to his cars? Got any more pictures of his cars to post on this thread?

Dan had some medical issues a while back, but is still around and doing better. He quit racing a few years back do to a no compete clause he signed when building some engines for another racer. I believe he will be back, he has built a new car.

  26. that car later became the famous phony landy car then got repainted into the non awb mcdonalds car out of chicago. when the sheriff came to get them they sat outside in the snow for a whole winter. when the case was wrapped up i wound up with the awb car see avatar. the non awb car went back to chicago and reggie jackson kept the ford product. there are alot of connected people who say that the penny pincher 65 did not come that way with the fiberglass. it does not mean it did not race that way. it just didnt leave the factory that way. there was a magazine story from the day on that car. it may provide more details. fiberglass panels were available through plaza fibergalss. 65 cars had thin gauge steel panels 63-64 had alum.

This is the 63 wagon my dad had when I was a kid. Guess its why I love the 63 Plymouth so much. Wish I could have saved this car. Ron

Drove my 63 to the track in Oct to race in a NSS race with my brother and some friends. I made 2 time runs and went 2 rounds in eliminations and the car ran a 10.81 on my first time run and then ran 10.76 three passes in a row. I lost to my brother in the second round because I had a .078 lite to his .012 even though I ran 10.76 on my 10.75 dail. Well if ya gotta lose I guess getting spanked by your brother isn't to bad. This is a time run with my buddy and his 65 Plymouth. I had a blast that day as the car ran great and I got to drive home as nothing broke. Man I love this thread !! Here is a vid of my first round win. Ron
