Vintage shots from days gone by!

I'm more interested in the '57 Mercury "Merchero" in the rear.

 

Always willing to learn. Prior to 1934, station wagon bodies on Plymouth's were built to customers' orders by various body builders. if you wanted a wagon you bought the bare chassis from your favorite dealer and had it shipped to a body builder where the body was added.

Plymouth pickup trucks started in 1937. There were "commercial cars" prior to that which were built on passenger car chassis.

 

That quarter panel alone is longer than many new cars !

 

That's Chuck Yeager on the left, the first official man through the sound barrier. Not sure of the other two but they look like pilots from the same program. The Bell X-1 behind them is Capt. Yeager's mount for being the first officially recognised manned aircraft to pass through the sound barrier (767 Mph/1,234Kmh).
There are claims that the sound barrier had been broken by manned aircraft, however Yeager's flight was the first officially measured event.

Neat post - I haven't contributed to this post but I've been going through some old pics and found these. Anyone know what it is with this A coupe? It looks like there's long grain vinyl all the way down to the belt line - maybe it's just the old pics. These pics are of my parents and their friends - young and in love:

Certainly Yeager on the left, and I have no idea who the guy in the middle is, but am wondering if that might be Jack Ridley in the helmet. Unlike how he was portrayed in the movie "The Right Stuff", Jack Ridley was apparently the aeronautical brains behind the project. He had a B.S. from the University of Oklahoma and a M.S. from Cal-Tech. If I understand correctly he developed the flight profile for the supersonic attempts and came up with the idea of using the entire horizontal stabilizer in place of just the elevators for elevator control.

Noticed that two, almost missed it, is that Jason on the back seat floor?

 

One of those neat pumps that raised when using it and then closing down when they shut down for the night. Very expensive in todays market. Kept people from stealing gas.

 

+It looks like the taped cars are being flat towed, though I can't see any tow bars. And what's with all the tape ?
